    RS3 and R35 Owner - Ask Away

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
It seems many RS3 owners like myself have always wanted to own a GTR and at somepoint make the transition to R35 ownership. Whilst some GTR owners wanting a bit more practicality go the RS3 route.

After 3 years of RS3 ownership I was in the fortunate and very grateful positon to keep my stage 3 RS and also purchase a FBO 2015 Black Edition R35 GTR. I could never imagine selling one or the other, both amazing cars and both so different yet similar at the same time.

For those of you who own either car and have considered changing from one to the other, I'm more than happy to answer any questions you might have regarding the two cars.

If you've owned both cars it would be great to hear your thoughts also.

Just the thread I was waiting for lol. So having the S3 for a year I had the itch to get something better, it really came down to rs3 or gtr. Something about the gtr has always fascinated me. I've driven it only once, a couple months ago, for about 5 min. I found 1 each in the used market (2018 RS 15k miles vs 2015 gtr 20k miles) but wound up with the RS and saved 20 grand. The price diff was the biggest purchasing factor but I'm really happy with the Audi for now.

Wait there are others like me? 😄
Having two young kids (7 and 3) the choice was pretty blatant for me, but damn if I didn’t put my wife through the anxiety wringer test driving a couple r35s before showing her the rs3.

Quick question - would you daily the gtr?

Absolutely. In fact when I bought the GTR the rs3 was neglected for at least a month. I drove the GTR daily and did the school run with my two boys (9 and 6). It's smooth, comfortable and easy to drive. However if my wife is with us then it's the RS3 as my 9 year old can't fit comfortably in the back. She has her own car so I alternate between the RS and GTR.

You made the right choice. Overall without a doubt the RS3 is the best value car both in terms of what you get for your money but also how little you need to spend to extract more power. I knew I could never sell my RS3 to buy a GTR as I needed the practicality and extra creature comforts of the RS3.

Would it also be fair to say that the cost to get the GTR to go as fast as a tuned stage 3 RS3 would be significantly more?

I have an RS3 and a c7 grand sport. I constantly think about selling the corvette and getting a GTR or a TT/RS (would make the TT/RS a lot crazier than I can with the RS3, as it's my daily and family car). I'd love to hear your overall comparison between the RS3 and GTR. I don't usually buy used, but on this situation, it would be new TT/RS vs used GTR.

I'd say my FBO GTR is really not far off my stage 3 rs3 both running 95. I'm yet to draggy them both in equal conditions but the butt dyno has them pretty equal.

Personally owning an RS3 I wouldn't have a TTRS also. Not because the difference between the two isn't significant enough, but because the GTR is such a different experience compared to the TTRS / RS3. It's rear wheel bias so you'll feel at home coming from the C7 but then the trick diffs shifting power to the front when needed is a lot of fun. I've never owned a C7 or any America muscle car so can't comment on how the GTR would compare to the corvette, but I personally love the different handling characteristics between the rs3 and the GTR not to mention the exhaust note is just beautiful. For me being a JDM fan boy the GTR was always the ultimate car goal, now I have one I can't imagine selling it, the road presence it has alone keeps me smiling.

GTR naturally feels bigger and heavier than the RS3 which feels like go kart once you've being driving the GTR for a few hours. However for such a heavy car the GTR is surprisingly agile.

RS3 more chilled the seats are softer as is the suspension, sound deadening etc. Its a great daily family car which is why I think its the perfect all rounder. GTR is also comfortable and really nice on the open highways when in comfort suspension setting its perfect.

RS3 has more lag and needs to be in the right gear compared to the GTR which just pulls from anywhere and those turbos spool up quick.

Thanks! I'm not too concerned with comfort overall. I've owned many Mustangs, an SRT4, and Evo IX, lol, so for me it's about speed and handling over luxury and comfort. Though, I do appreciate what cars like the RS3 offer, now that I've gotten older. As for handling, the c7 grand sport was the best handling car motortrend had ever tested - its limits are more than I will ever reach on the streets. Important to remember that that only applies when it's dry out. I don't ever take it out in the rain. It's scary when the ground is wet.

Really, the RS3 is the most fun all around car I've ever owned, which is why I'm thinking of getting the TT/RS and going for all-out speed. I know the platform now, and could have my cake and eat it too. The GTR has been a dream car since 2010ish, and I still havent ever owned one. However, it's an aging platform and Im not sure the car still has the wow factor it once did. Anyway, I appreciate hearing the comments and feedback from an owner who also has the daza platform

Try if you haven't already to get behind the wheel of one, ideally a FBO car. See what you think. Either way GTR or TTRS, you'll have plenty of fun! Evo IX is sweet, I'm in the process of building a E7 GSR, which for me is the most fun car out of all 3.

I will definitely have to drive one before deciding.

Yea the EVO was a great car. It may have been the only car that I really enjoyed driving even when it was stock. It was a harsh ride, though. Not as bad as the SRT4, but definitely not made for comfort!

^^^Couldn't have said it better myself!

R35 GT-R was a dream car of mine once as well, and yeah, I feel like time has passed it by in some regards. I feel like I can get most of the driving enjoyment from my RS3 plus be able to transport more people & cargo reasonably well. GT-R will always be a legendary car for me though, it will always have a place in my lottery garage!

Was/Am hoping Honda does a non-hybrid NSX with AWD, but feel like that is unlikely at best.

I have hope for the C8 Corvette & it's forthcoming higher performance spec - though I wouldn't rule out a base Stingray Z71 with ProCharger supercharger or twin-turbo set up either.

Last, the last 2 generations of 911 GTS/Carrera 4S have been pretty compelling, but ownership/maintenance costs of those cars worry me.

I had the pleasure of driving a gtr for a weekend, and boy what a fun car. I would like to own one some day. The power band was unlike most turbo cars ive driven and the car was intoxicating to drive. Definitely another level compared to my rs3 in overall experience.

Like said above I personally wouldnt have a ttrs and an rs3 either. While i love both i just feel like the engine “character” is too similar.

On that note Im actually more of the type of engine character person where i want to have 2 different driving experiences (from the engine specifically). Therefore i dont think i would have a gtr and rs3 if i was limited to two “fun cars” due to them both being turbo’d. I realize they are still so different in every other way though. If i could have 3 cars for sure.

For me i would rather have a corvette and a gtr OR rs3/ttrs. Basically what i am getting at is a N/A or S/C car and a turbo car.

Assuming i had a ttrs or rs3 for a daily i think i would be looking at a N/A 911 or Cayman, R8, or a Corvette type vehicle in manual to get a different enjoyment.

I agree with the last 2 posts. Having the rwd muscle car is nice, but the RS3 is so much more predictable and easy to drive fast. Maybe it comes down to laziness lol

Ok, like all others GTR is a bucket list car for me. Also like others I bought my RS3 3 yrs ago as a less expensive GTR option and extremely happy 3 yrs later. I was able to keep my white E36 M3 sedan and imola Red E46 M3 in the process. So let me know your thoughts: 2021 my $80K budget is: used GTR, 2007 911 manual (another bucket list car I think will appreciate being the last 911 turbo manual made), used Aston Martin V8 Vantage GT (maybe manual but I think I will be bored as shit with it personally but a nice dinner with wife car) and surprisingly I just built the new BMW M3 base, manual for $69,900 (2022 manual m3 next to my e36 m3 sedan is pretty cool to me and a new car I can daily to all my kids sports tourneys is a nice thought) knowing I would put wheels, maybe wrap it in Phoenix Yellow or Estriol Blue (great e46/e36 colors) or Nardo Grey to match the RS3 and find a way to replace the ugly ass grilles with a Prior Bumper if they make it. I figure all of us on this thread have similar car tastes, What is your opinion?

Im guessing your e36 and possibly e46 are manual. I think the new M3 will basically be a “nicer” and beefier rs3. If you are keeping the rs3 i would get the aston probably. If you are ditching the RS3 then new M3 or GTR leaning more toward the GTR to have a DCT in the garage. My 2 cents

I know of a well maintained 2007 997 turbo for sale if you want it, seriously.

Some nice cars you own already. Personally if you want more of an investment car, the Porsche is the way to go. The GTR is bags of fun and you could likely find a well tuned car for your budget which means you won't end up spending money on mods.

Not sure how possible it will be to make the new M3/M4 look better or like its older sibling even if they come up with something in the aftermarket.

For me it's the dimensions of the kidney grills compared to the older gen. And I don't think that's something you can really modify.

AudiRS#. actually yes DM or email me the info on the 997. I agree with Space Cowboy after going to look at the new M3, its out. Almost zero BMW vibe from the outside. Interior is gorgeous but outside is .....Actually just put a M2C on my list.
