    Downpipe Options

    All,

I told myself I wouldn't mod my a3 past APR stage 1 tune, but with Zero cars falling within my interest as new alternative, I am thinking of doing a little more to it now.

I am totally out of the loop on Stage 2. I have heard that APR will no longer offer downpipes. Does that mean stage 2 Tunes as well?

If I was to source a different downpipe brand, would I be able to upgrade my APR tune?

Who makes descent downpipes that are not rediculous price tag that i have been seeing, preferably with a hi-flo cat. I am okay with galvanized piping for cheaper price. I do not live in a salty state, so i dont need to worry about rust.

its more than rust.. Stainless contains the heat much better than carbon steel (better power) and it won't break down from the thermal cycling like plain steel will (lasting longer)- I don't think any reputable mfg does carbon steel. Any of the pipes "should" work with any of the tunes. I run APR DP with a Unitronic tune though I had to add an o2 spacer for it not to throw codes. I think APR's design is the most "thermally safe" allowing higher tuning, but its probably the worst for actual emissions performance as it moves the cat away from the head more and won't "light off" as quickly. You can still get the Unitronic pipe I believe. It also requires the annual dance of removing the tune, getting emissions test, then reapplying it which is a bit annoying, but also means if you have testing you are best off with a tune you can do yourself at home - or you'll have to pay for it on and off every year. A DP with high flow cat is gonna be what, 900-ish? It is what it is unless you want to buy a high flow cat and weld up your own.... not impossible but for most of us that can, still not worth the bother. I think there's a few APR pipes out there still. I've had the best luck with Unitronic tunes so far (on both my S3 and R8) but have used other tunes also across the 12 or so vag cars I've had and I'm sure they are all fairly similar. I've only had actual issues that cost me money and hassle with APR. Typically any of the stage I tunes are similar and fine, but as you go up from there it starts to separate with more varied results. You'll also need a TCU tune. The Unitronic TCU tune is fine, but if I run full tilt and don't turn off traction control it won't shift properly. They weren't much if any help on that issue, so I just make sure I have TC off if I/m going to hoon about. (none of the vendors are perfect). Don't forget an intercooler upgrade too; you can get by without but won't be making all the power that the software will deliver. All-in-all, you'll be spending a lot more money to properly do stage II. The value prop over stage I is really not good, but I enjoy modding stuff so did that and a lot more besides just for the fun of it. You might be best just sticking to stage I.

I'm happy with my ARM Motorsports catted downpipe. Can't beat it for the price and it's a quality piece. Fits perfect and I like that they use v-bands for the connections.

If running a catted DP dont forget to get a 02 spacer, the proper one will prevent the check engine light (CEL) from coming on

If you look at the pricing section on the APR website, it says discontinued for their Stage 2 software.

I'd recommend having APR flash your car back to stock and go Cobb. Lot's of tuning options through Cobb.

CTS Turbo, Invidia, and the previously mentioned ARM are three catted downpipes that are reasonable price I am aware of.

If you can find a new APR downpipe it will have a code associated with it for the stg2 file. Other than that its no longer available.

I heard it is an amazing file, and there are some of the APR DPs still floating around.

If i were to source a used APR downpipe, would I still be able to get stage 2 flash?

Last thing i want to do is spend that much more money on a new tuner flash when i already have APR on the car.

With a used APR, probably not. You could double check with an APR dealer about new and used and the stage 2 availability.

What are your goals? Do you want to make your car louder? Do you want a downpipe that might not throw a CEL? You can buy a CTS catted downpipe for around 6-800 dollars that will come with a cheap 200 cell HO cat. There are downpipes that use GESI or HJS cats that are much higher quality and might not throw a CEL. Cobb has one that is resonated so you'll get minimal gains in sound. DBV2 has a 3.5inch downpipe and you can add a GESI cat. Right now the flavor of the month seems to be Trackslag downpipes. Relatively well priced and well built (but not as nice as DBV2) and it's the only 4 inch downpipe out right now. In terms of performance most catted downpipes will be similar. The main difference is quality of build and the quality of the cat.
