Picked up a new all black Sq5 and debating how to install the front license plate

    Hi all,
Picked up a new SQ5 2021 prem plus with black optics pkg...
I didn't know it will arrive without front license plates bracket and now debating how to install one.
Iv'e been searching the forums and online, some people use 3m tape, some drill it directly to the grill which im against but will do if i must.

    Thoughts?

    appreciate the help!

How about a 3rd party bracket? I have seen this and thought it interesting.

I just picked one up over the weekend as well and found the front plate bracket in the trunk so you should have gotten one.

However, based on the included screws, it looks like it was meant to be mounted right here, meaning you’d need to drill. I’ll be leaving mine off lol

Man That sucks, Audi really could have just made a cover for the spots in the grille. In CA dealers are typically installing the front plates pre-delivery. I normally remove my front plate and was happy that the pre-facelift offered filler strips.

Looks fine with factory mount IMO. If you are giving it back holes don't matter.

I’m in SoCal and I don’t think I saw an SQ5 with a front plate at either of the dealerships I went to and saw at least 3 or 4 dozen of them.

If it's the law to have a front plate, it's on your dealership to install a plate mount. Never heard of this before.

Many dealers will ask your permission first regardless of whether or not it is the law in your state to ensure you are okay with that, or in case you had other intentions (stow away, flip up, tow hook etc).

Are there any good indy shops in NorCal that can perform the drilling for me? I dont want to mess this up.

Also i would rather drill the front grill than get a ticket, just a personal preference. I have a friend with an RS3 that's been driving without a front plate for like 4 years now with no problems at all :)

The dealer screwed mine in when I was in finance so by time I asked them not to mount it was too late. You don't need to go to a shop as they just mounted it with black wood screws. Get your mount in place and tape it down so it won't shift while screwing it down.

I pulled mine off as soon as I got home and bought some tiny black filler plugs on amazon.

It's the law here in this shit state of CO but I purposely excluded this on my build. Never had an issue with not running a front plate in 21 yrs here. If I ever get a ticket for it then I don't really care I'll pay the fine.

I’ve also never run into a problem without running a front plate anywhere in the country after probably around a decade of driving like this.

interesting, ive been hearing you are not always getting a 'fix it' ticket and sometimes you just get fined. is that true?

    thanks!

My wife had the same issue. She got a ticket 3 months after buying the car . Make the dealer do it. They are required by law. She called the dealer and they bitched about it but eventually gave in.

I've had 2 tickets in the last 10 years for no front plate. Both fix-it.

dealer just dropped 2021 sq5. told them not to install plate. was thinking same mount upside down from lower part of upper mesh grill so it would be in same place except not screwed into stock grill. should work????

Not the point. The OP bought a car from a dealer who did not put on his plate bracket. It's on the dealership to do so as he clearly wants it on.

still not quite the point. op, like me, would prefer not to have it screwed to the front of the car by the dealer. entertaining other options like the tow hook mount on the passenger side or possibly something like the sly bracket mounted upside down

You may not agree with the front license plate laws in your state but think about this, not having a required front plate gives law enforcement a reason to pull you over and opens up the window for them to find anything else that might not be right. I don't like to have a front plate on my SQ5 but like a lot of people I am out with my wife for dinner and have a beer or maybe 2 and if I'm driving by a law enforcement person on my way home doing nothing wrong but not having a front plate and he feels motivated to pull me over he can. If he smells the slightest hint of alcohol he can get me out of the car for a sobriety test which in most states the minimum is so low now a days you are probably getting a ticket.

Now if you never get behind the wheel after having a drink with dinner go ahead and take your chance of getting a Fix-It ticket and paying the fine

If you are above the limit, you shouldn't be driving.

I just imagined you making these comments to a judge after getting a DUI and had myself a good chuckle. I’m not convinced you’re responsible enough to be driving to be honest. Might want to rethink your priorities.

Your statement is arrogant, pointing out a possible scenario of getting pulled over for not having a front license plate that maybe others are not thinking about. If you don't agree that is OK.

Are you sure you know what the definition of “arrogant” is? Because I’m not quite sure how you made that correlation if you don’t mind explaining? Yeah, I definitely don’t agree that it is OK for people to justify driving over the legal limit; most of the population can’t even make good judgement calls driving sober. And to top it off, your idea of helping the community is advising people on how to improve their chances of avoiding getting caught. Did you ever think to yourself you might be the arrogant a******, not me?
