Why all the akebono ceramic pads luv?

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
I installed new rotors and akebono pads last weekend. I’m underwhelmed by the pads performance compared to stock(much less initial bite, no noticeable improvement in stopping power). My experience is on street only, so can’t speak to fade resistance. But just daily driving, the akebono ceramic pads are average at best....with the exception of brake dust.

Any better pads out there for dd ?

    Thanks,
    W

Yes no brake dust and less initial bite is a positive for me.

I hate the grabby feel of German brakes. The light tap of the pedal and you get jerked forward in your seat. I like the more linear feel of the pedal with the akebono. The harder you press the harder it brakes.

With ceramic pads and/or rotors isn't their peak performance at certain temps?

With my pads I notice they don't bite at all when I first pull out the driveway and I have to step a little harder, plus they'll squeal a little. Theb after a few stops signs they'll start to pick up more bite.

I'm rubbinf Q5 brembos with ceramic pads from ECS

For those looking for an upgrade over OEM pads, the Akebonos are a simple, solid choice. They offer less initial grab and a more linear response to your input. No noise.
I wash my car every week and with the OEM pads it got really frustrating to see brake dust build up in only 2 -3 days. With the Akebonos the brake dust is almost entirely gone.

Yes, there are numerous other manufacturers out there offering quality pads. For my (non-tracked) daily driver, this was an excellent choice.

Running these with Macan calipers. Mine continue to squeal 6 months after installing whether I’m driving 5mph or 70mph; freezing temps or 60 degrees. Little brake dust though.

Did you use an anti-squeal paste?

Huge drop in dust build up and a much better feel, in my opinion. Stock pads were too grabby and touchy. I much prefer a more linear and progressive feel and the Akebonos deliver this.

I have. Twice actually. Rotors are OE Parts from ECS.

I just got me some Raybestos street performance pads and rotors. Good quality and not super expensive.

Love them here. No noise, dust, and no jerky first bite. Great all around. Ran them on stock brakes and the Q5 calipers I have on now( no noise, sorry to hear about yours Glacier).

Something must be off with your setup, I’ve run this same thing since July 2020 and there is ZERO noise on mine.

I love my akebonos over stock due to the less initial bite. It was hard to brake smoothly when parking in the garage with oem, no problem with akebonos. Also, I've never seen my wheels so clean for so long. That alone is worth it to me. The braking performance from high speed braking feels the same to me vs oem, and easier to modulate and control.

I'm running Hawk 5.0 up front (with Zimmerman rotors) and I really like them. Designed as a high performance street/light track duty pad. They squeal occasionally (very rarely) and dust is low. I would recommend at least taking a look if you're considering making another change. And if you do, might as well bump up your fluid to something with a higher boiling point to take full advantage.

I stick with Pagid semi-metallics, Zimmermann Coat Z rotors, and ATE Typ 200 Fluid. I hate loosing the initial bite when switching to ceramic pads. I ordered everything from FCP so if I ever start to get noisy brakes I can just replace them for free with their lifetime warranty (I've been running my current set for 2 years and I rarely hear a squeak).

On our T3 Touareg I tried the Akebono Ceramics and ditched them after towing. I just didn't have the confidence that I did with the OE compound. I had to mash the brake pedal when stopped facing downhill to keep from inching forward.

There's definitely more dust than the ceramics. But performance trumps aesthetics for me when it comes to braking.

Yeah I used Akebonos for years.
    I'm not a fan anymore.
Very numb brake feel, no initial bite, outright dangerous performance in the winter or cold wet weather.
I've since moved to Hawk performance ceramic pads. The brake dust is pretty low.

I won't use ceramic pads--with multiple vehicles, I have experienced ceramic pads leaving deposits on rotors, which results in pedal judder. On every car that's had that problem, I've resolved it permanently by switching to semi metallic pads and bedding them in (10 hard almost-stops from 60ish mph).

I am using Raybestos Element3 pads on my S4 currently. They have good stopping power, good bite, low dust, and no noise. https://www.rockauto.com/en/moreinfo...309881&jsn=439

You can also try out Porterfield R4-S Pads

I run them on all my cars now - not a true Race Pad - but a great performance DD Pad - never found any issues with them

I too have been using the Hawk HP 5.0 pads for the past 20k miles on my DD. When its time to replace them, I'll go with those pads again. Low dust, extended wear, easy on the JHM rotors, linear pedal feel, good stopping power, and they play well with our ABS. I tried a couple of pads that just did not get along with the ABS and my braking "style".
