Question Who has installed a Carbon Hood Vent/insert...

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
So I'm looking at installing this as part of the full aero kit...
    https://www.dmcarbon.com/products/au...mance-air-vent

this requires cutting the hood to install it.

has anyone had this installed? did it require a repaint of the hood and how much pain ($) was associated with it?

The cutting should be easy as it's a single template. The original vent had four pins that secured it to the hood. How does this one mount? Either way I bet that is less than a 4 hour job with measuring taking most of the time.

Here is a pic of the Audi sport hood. You’ll see it has in inset the vent sits down into and 4 holes at the corner the vent pegs go through to lock it in from the backside. Not sure how you cut your existing hood and achieve this. I can tell you this was a total pain in the ass with the official hood. But I can sell you a spare hood on the cheap if you mess up IMG_0054.jpg

I really don't think you need the hood. There are plenty of bonding compounds that you can use on the inside of the hood to prevent ejection. Hell a couple globs of JB Weld would do that. It won't be as flush without the hood but it isn't going to be sticking out either.

I've seen plenty of Track Attack folks cut the hood and insert various vents in them. Some have even simply cut holes in the hood while at the track. Being that our hood is aluminum it will not be a problem.

It certainly would be helpful to know how the backside of the vent looks as some manufacturers allow you to drill a few holes and secure from the underside.

I am also looking at the Dark matter carbon fiber aero kit for my 2018 TT RS. Let us know how it goes when you get it all put together. Looks sick!

I don't know, it's got a serious lip on it and if it's just slapped on top of the hood, it's going to look like those guys that buy Jegs hood scoops and glue them on their Corrolas. Personally I doubt it will look good and dear lord, $700 for a 10" long piece of CF?

Apologies for this rudimentary question but with this vent installed, will you be able to drive when it's raining?

I think above the bonnet (hood?) is a low pressure area and the vent is designed to let hot air from the radiator and various coolers to leave the engine bay rather than let air in. So if you're moving rain will not be able to enter as air is leaving. Quite what happens when you're parked is a different matter.

So, you think that water will enter on a parked TT RS with the Audi Performance Parts hood with the scoop?

ILR sells a carbon fiber scoop that looks just like the Audi Performance Parts; and you can buy just the scoop or the scoop + a base that keeps it in place.

Cutting was the easy part... marking the hole was terrifying 😅

Thanks, in after thought I should have copied my template and uploaded it into a google file but sadly for some reason I threw it out when I was done. The task now is to make an underside trim to make it look good while the hoods up. I tried using some rubber trim but I don't think it's the way to go here, a poly back would look much better IMHO. Maybe I need to buy a slightly larder 3d printer so I can make them.

I’m in the same boat! Those are big !

So it was easier to mark it on the exterior side of the hood? I would guess there are more reference points on the back.

How did you fixed the new scoop? Is it the OEM one?

Any updates on this mod? How did you end up holding the hood’s scoop? What did you use to hold on the 4 metallic pins? Thanks!

Well I finally pulled trigger and summed up the courage to cut hole in the hood. After creating my template and measuring and re-measuring and a stiff drink I jumped in with dremel in hand.
I will say the final cut is somewhat rough but not a huge issue since insert covers it. Like some others the only real exposure of this hack job is under the hood and would like to create some coverup of the under the hood look to give it a little more stock look.

Thanks. I’ll try and get some pics under the hood - not the prettiest look at the moment. Car is away for a week and getting wrapped.
