New RS5 owner, what all can you see in the HUD?

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
Just bought the 2021 RS5 last night and getting things setup. For RS1 and RS2, I see the speed, temp to the left, and a 0.00.0 at top in my heads up display. Is there a way to change this?
Service advisor didn't know last night. I'm coming from a 2015 M3 which in M mode had a big tach, speed, and gear number. In comfort mode my M3 had speed, traffic speed signs. when I change songs on my usb drive it would show list of songs in HUD. Same for radio stations.

Overall a great car and happy to be here.

On YouTube, there are two videos by the same guy who reviews the HUD, Drive Select, Virtual Cockpit, etc. for the 2021 RS models. I forget the exact names, but a YouTube search for "2021 RS HUD Virtual Cockpit" would probably find them. They both have some pretty good info for 2021 RS models.

There is a button to the right of the light switch where you can change position of the HUD and toggle between different displays. The timer, oil temp, speed and rpm is one. Then there’s a speed and nav. There maybe one more. Small dial is also there to rotate the HUD. This is on my 2019 though.

BTW, welcome to Club Audi RS, B9 Division! Glad to hear you like the car. I've had mine for 2 years now, driven nothing but Audi Sport or Porsches for 35 years, and this is the greatest car I've ever driven/owned.

If you find a way to get rid of the timer, I'd like to know how.

I’m with you on that one. Or add rpm on other settings. Don’t think it can be changed without some software tinkering I would think...

I checked my 2021 RS5. There is a button to adjust the position of the HUD. But, that appears to be the only thing you can change on the HUD. Of course, changing the drive mode (RS vs Comfort vs Auto, etc.) will change the HUD contents. But, in RS mode, I can't find any way to change what is shown. I, too, would like to remove the overly large lap timer...

I have it too on the RS4 but the information displayed is too low, and no chance to change nothing.
A bit ridiculous for a modern RS car.

You should be able to push that button to change the setting and even turn it all the way off. It works as a cw/ccw dial and as a push button. At least on mine. I don’t think it’s been changed for 9.5 refresh.

Just checked. There are 2 buttons. 1) A small black button that is depressed by default. Press and it extends. Turning left/right increases/decreases the brightness of the HUD and interior lights. 2) A slightly larger "aluminum" button that is "extended" by default. Turning this button allows some adjustment as to how high/low the HUD appears in the windshield. Pressing the button turns the HUD off/on. No way to change what is displayed in the HUD, except by changing the Drive Mode.

On my 2019 model, you can push that larger button to change what’s displayed on the HUD. 3 different settings including the ability to turn it off completely or selectively display certain info.

The HUD is a let down. I saw the RS6 HUD has the full L shaped tach. You would think they could have kept it same for RS5.
I'm coming from a 2015 M3 and that had a huge tach that would blink red at redline and big gear number indicator. Also in non sport mode it would switch to your song list or radio station list when you made a change then auto switch back to regular HUD.

Yeah, definitely not the most engaging HUD. RS6 version executes it much better. But in manual mode, our HUDs do show the tach colors like the main gauge on the HUD.

Driving during the day, the HUD is completely faded out due to my sunglasses....I forget I even have it until I pull into the garage. Not something I would have picked if it didn't come with the launch edition package! I've only had mine for a week, so, will need some more time in a wider range of conditions to make a better analysis, but for now, seems like an unnecessary feature.

This is true if your sunglasses are polarized. Try the non-polarized variety and see if that makes a difference.

Or turn your head side way a little bit. This was the same as in my S4.

By the way, I wonder if we can mess with what is displayed in the HUD with OBD II.

This has been discussed in another thread/forum and believe there isn’t a way to modify what is displayed in the HUD. I find the lap time to be useless. I’d like rpms and gear number myself.

I don't think I'll be driving on the race track. In any RS mode, I can't even see the speed limit and/or navigation instructions. I was able to turn off the RS mode laptimer with OBD11. It appears to show just the regular HUD content in RS modes. I've not driven the car yet, but I'll report back if something weird happens.

So, if you want to see your normal HUD stuff in the RS modes, do this with OBD11. I confirmed today that this works.

In the Display Module long coding, change "Laptimer_activated" to "not available".

Thanks, this is worth picking up ODB11 for.

Should be able to. Use the long coding helper, I think. I have older versions of VCDS, but they don't work on newer cars, at least not all the modules.

By the way, the lap timer is still available in the dash display, just not on the HUD.

I used my vagcom to get rid of lap timer and oil temp. Would be nice if we could get RPM to to show. My brothers Ascari launch edition and it had the RPM along with shift lights, pretty cool feature. Now I'm trying to get windows to open but not having any luck, is it easier to do with a obd11? Going to order one of them

That’s awesome. I’ve been too lazy to try myself but not seeing the lap timer would be perfect. I do agree about the RPM since mine is a 2019. I think Audi could’ve executed that better like the M3/4 HUDs.

Is this only possible on the '21 RS's? I have a '19 and would love to get rid of the lap timer and oil temps. so useless for me!

I just plugged in my VCDS and the HUD module doesn't show a way to disable the laptimer on my 2019. Unless I'm in the wrong module. It's module 82, HUD...

You need to go into "Coding - 07", and see what is in there. Or try Basic Settings. I don't use my VCDS on this car anymore, so I don't really know. But from my past experiences, those are the two places to look.

I did. and there is an option for long coding. And the laptimer sadly wasn't on the list of things you can change...I'll post that pic later on and play around to see if I can figure this out.

82 was the module I used. Maybe can't do on 2019? but when I get car back will take a picture of where I did it

This is what I have in my 2021 RS5 Black Optic Launch in RS mode. Does anyone with the Ascari edition see something different?

When accelerating hard five horizontal bars appear over the lap timer (0:00.0). Green, yellow, red bars. When you stop or slow down they disappear. Stupid design Audi.

The sport HUD on the 2021 RS6. So technically it can be done by Audi.

That was how I looked before removing lap timer and oil temp. I think mine might have those bars appear like that? Will have to check when I pick up my car
