Has anyone done this before. It has factory runners and I will be installing the thule crossbars. Wondering if the factory rails/roof can take it. 2014 b8.5 allroad.

The factory roof rails load limit is 198 lbs. That includes the crossbars, whatever container is mounted to the crossbars, and whatever is in the container. I would keep yourself centered between the crossbar mount points at all times, including while mounting and dismounting.

Not quite the same car, but I have a 2009 A4 Avant and used a small Yakima Skyrise (2 person) rooftop tent for a couple days in a state park campsite (paved roads). I had old Yakima round STEEL bars with Rail Grab towers and claws that were sitting in the garage. No problems with wind/driving. When I picked it up in the Avant, the clerk mentioned "that's a really nice car to go camping in." Initially was going to go on a Q5 (which was unfortunately totaled). Rails are flush, not raised like yours.

I do it regularly with my B7 a4 Avant. I have never had even the slightest issue. I have also done it with my Alltrack with no issues.

If you're worried about the weight issue on the roof rails something like this SUV tent from Rightline might be a cool option. Provides access to the interior of the car also for sleeping or whatever.

The lightest RTT you can likely find is the Tepui Baja or the new GFC Superlite.

I just use the GFC Superlite, but sometimes I hook up a lightweight caravan for a comfortable journey with the family. I have such a caravan https://www.horizonteardrops.com/, I travel in a large company and the tent will not provide such comfort as a trailer, especially since there are much more functions there. I like that there is a battery to charge the phone, as always you need to be in touch. plus you can calmly relax, drink tea and admire the views.
