The method you speak of for downloading is not really understood by me. So even talking with a tech I would not be able to have a meaningful conversation.
It appears everyone is covering their butt, which I can appreciate. If I decide to go further I will use your advice above when asking.
Thanks for the information..
Yeah, it does not seem to be worth the effort (and cost really) to do the update in your case. The sound of the tune and engine will certainly be the focal point. Since getting the sub control, it certainly makes some gains but mainly on high quality audio and certain genres I have noticed. I still think the system could be a bit better but we all have our own tastes in the end.
As for the software update, Audi has 2 ways to perform it when it comes to updating the MMI system (model depending of course). For the 8V, they can either:
1) Run their onboard diagnostic software (ODIS) and flash the infotainment control module by downloading the package and installing via the computer. Module is updated via the OBD port using ODIS software. This I think is where both dealer and APR would be worried as the system scans the entire car module software / coding values and then compares it to what is stored on the Audi servers. It is also known to flag variances with module changes (hence the warranty note above). Some MMI software updates are downloaded this way and installed via the next step
2) Less common but also can be done, the dealer can order an SD card that contains the software update (or create the SD card using #1). This update is performed by inserting the SD card into the reader in the glovebox. This usually only applies to updates for the main Infotainment control module or virtual cockpit if installed. The dealer in your instance could order this card (or make one) and update the via the car itself. Navigation map updates by the dealer are typically done in this fashion as well.
Again, up to you and the dealer. If they do not seem aware of this process or not confident, best to not push it as again does not sound worth it to your needs. Figured I would shed some more clarity on the process. Cheers
