    MMI update

My MMI doesn’t recognize the B&O subwoofer. This is what I found: Repair Services: Tell Us More - Interested in coming in for TSB 2051078/1 to fix Subwoofer settings missing from MMI on B&O sound system (version 1196). Looks like this came out in Late October 2018.

Question would be I have a stage 1 ECU and DSG tune. Will the dealership MMI update interfere with the tunes.

I am thinking it won’t but still seek advice.

The MMI update will not impact the engine and transmission ECU software levels.

That being said, the dealer will scan the car and connect with Audi servers to install the update. Most likely this process will flag your flashes and potentially note it in their systems. It will really depend on the dealer you go to. But flashing the 5F will not affect 01 and 02 modules.

Ya car is out of warranty so no cares about flags. The dealership told me it could change the tune not delete it. And they don’t know how it would be changed. Anyway not worth the effort to possible need to have apr tune reinstalled. Let along driving the 70 miles on a tune that who knows how it was altered.

Marttimat you sound like you know your stuff. The dealership wasn’t so sure. Not stating 5F and modules 01& 02. Maybe I need to investigate further.

It has been a few years since working on the line with these cars so there is always the possibility of process change these days (take it with a grain of salt). My 2017 came without the B&O subwoofer setting and I remember waiting for AoA to release the MMI update. I believe they can also flash 5F (Infotainment control module) via ordering an SD card (vs doing SVM), this certainly would have no impact to the engine and trans ECUs. I am surprised the dealer would not want to do this as it is a straight forward software update (esp customer pay). I wonder if they just want to play it safe and not have any follow up complaints since your car is tuned? Who knows, as mentioned, every dealer is different, especially those that are new to the firmware update craze that is taking over the service industry.

Thanks for the information. I talked with APR and they advised to have the stock tune applied when doing any downloads. Then reinstall their tune. Seems like a lot off work for access to sub woofer control. I am not a audiophile. Nor actually really listen to music much.

The method you speak of for downloading is not really understood by me. So even talking with a tech I would not be able to have a meaningful conversation.

It appears everyone is covering their butt, which I can appreciate. If I decide to go further I will use your advice above when asking.

    Thanks for the information..

Yeah, it does not seem to be worth the effort (and cost really) to do the update in your case. The sound of the tune and engine will certainly be the focal point. Since getting the sub control, it certainly makes some gains but mainly on high quality audio and certain genres I have noticed. I still think the system could be a bit better but we all have our own tastes in the end.

As for the software update, Audi has 2 ways to perform it when it comes to updating the MMI system (model depending of course). For the 8V, they can either:
    1) Run their onboard diagnostic software (ODIS) and flash the infotainment control module by downloading the package and installing via the computer. Module is updated via the OBD port using ODIS software. This I think is where both dealer and APR would be worried as the system scans the entire car module software / coding values and then compares it to what is stored on the Audi servers. It is also known to flag variances with module changes (hence the warranty note above). Some MMI software updates are downloaded this way and installed via the next step
    2) Less common but also can be done, the dealer can order an SD card that contains the software update (or create the SD card using #1). This update is performed by inserting the SD card into the reader in the glovebox. This usually only applies to updates for the main Infotainment control module or virtual cockpit if installed. The dealer in your instance could order this card (or make one) and update the via the car itself. Navigation map updates by the dealer are typically done in this fashion as well.

Again, up to you and the dealer. If they do not seem aware of this process or not confident, best to not push it as again does not sound worth it to your needs. Figured I would shed some more clarity on the process. Cheers

Thanks so much again for being extremely helpful. I have searched the problem with lots of dead ends. Your explanation trumps everything I have read. I used to belong to a Corvette Dorum and posted some 15,000 times. I enjoyed being able to help others in moderate ways. I had a tune on the 2008 C6 at 800 miles followed by long tubes and a 4:10 differential up from the stock 3:42. I was one of the first ones so Dino numbers etc I made available. Not a mechanic by any means and technology is hard for me being 72 and never had to use technology in my line of work.

    Thanks again much appreciated.

Not a problem, happy to help! These forums have allowed me to do so much on my car (direct TPMS, Homelink, Coding changes etc.) I try to pay it back where I can to potentially help others. Best of luck! I may be PMing you about your stage 1. I may be in the market for 1 in the future.

Also, I used to live in Campbell CA. Great little town in the south bay

Yes Campbell is a nice town. I grew up mid Peninsula during the 50’s, so I have seen the changes with the inception of Silicon Valley tech. Came from the Stanford area, Atherton. Much more rural back then.

Know the area well. I can imagine how nice and quiet it must have been before the tech boom. I used to love taking the S3 out through 84 through La Honda. Started getting tougher and tougher with more traffic at the end but still a beautiful drive.

Done 84 in car, motorcycle and bicycle many times. Too much traffic now.
