Today I was finally able to get my OEM Euro RS6 cup holder installed that I purchased from Peter GR. I’d also like to thank Topher for sending me a copy of the factory install .pdf. After reading over the process I figured I’d take step-by-step photos for people to be able to reference when/if they decide to take this on themselves.
The install took a total of about 1+45hrs to complete and I would call it a 5/10 on difficulty due to the need to be patient when removing the various plastic parts.
And yes, the car interior is dusty because it’s a daily and I didn’t wipe it down before starting the dismantling.
Tools required:
- T20 driver (8x screws holding the cup holder)
- T25 driver (5x screws holding the center console)
- Plastic trim removal tools (various sizes)
- Needle nose pliers (removal wire harness bottom of cup holder)
The first step is to remove the trim from the top of the shifter, under that you will find a single silver T25 screw that holds the assembly together. Once you remove the screw, you’ll need to use a trim removal tool to pry up the leather boot. With the leather up you can lift the handle up and off the console.
With the shifter removed you can now also remove the single T25 screw that resides under the aft cup holder rubber. Simply grab the tab of the rubber pad and pull it out to access the screw.
Now you’ll want to start removing the side trim panels. You will want to adjust both seats as far down in the base as they will go, the back laid flat and the seats pushed as far aft as they will go. It will allow to fully remove the side panels.
You will start at the front edge of the panels and pry/pull out. I personally found it easier to pull from the bottom to start the process. There are multiple tabs along the panel that will pop out of their clips. As you gently pull out and work towards the rear of the car.
As you get the arm rest, there are 3 clips that are rather close together. Two on the top edge and one on the bottom. I could that if you release the bottom first, the two top clips will then release and the remainder of the panel will pull off to the rear.
With the trim panels removed you will now be able to access the 3x T25 screws (green highlight) you’ll need to remove to allowing you to remove the center console. First, disconnect the black (left) and red (right) wire harness connections you’ll see just below the T25 screws.
With those disconnected and the three screws removed, starting at the rear of the console, you’ll pull up and then aft to remove the area under the upper screen.
There are two wiring connections (green highlight) that you’ll need to release before you can completely remove the console, one is the R, N, D/S indicator and the second is at the top edge of the screen, this is the antenna plug. I happened to find gray/silver duct tape wrapped on mine...and decided to just leave it in place.
With the center console fully removed you’ll now want to find a large area to safely place the console upside down to allow you to remove the US Spec cup holder.
The first thing you’ll want to do is remove the two barbed harness holders from the bottom of the US cup holder. While these are designed to be a one time use item as the are plastic barbed items, you can safely remove them by slowly wiggling them out with the use of a pair of needle nose pliers.
With the wire harness removed from the two spots, you can then disconnect the electrical plug that powers the 12v plug in the cup holder.
The final step is to remove the 8x T20 screws that attach the cup holder to the bottom of the trim. There are two at the top and bottom and then there are two per side. With those eight screws removed you can slide the cup holder slightly to the right and out of the console.
Next you’ll ensure that your European Spec cup holder has the piano black trim on the lid, close the lid and slide it into place where you removed the US Spec cup holder from. You’ll reinstall the 8x T20 screws, pop the wiring harness back into the two holes and reconnect the 12v plug on the bottom side of the aft cup holder. With all of that completed you are ready to reassemble the center console in the car. This process is exactly reverse of what you did you remove it from the car.
This Euro OEM part makes a huge difference in cleaning up the interior look of the car. I really don’t know why Audi choose to leave it out of the US cars but thankfully we can order it and do this install ourselves.
