Vinyl wrap on the grill chrome. Does it hold up?

I'm planning on de-chroming just the grill, since I want the chrome on the doors still. I've heard mixed reviews of vinyl not sticking well to chrome and having a very short life span. I'd like to get some opinions here.

Maybe not exactly what you’re looking for, but I’ve had my grill chrome plasti dipped black for about 2.5 years and it still looks alright. About perfect from 10 feet away.

Plasti dip probably will not come off though, it doesn’t peel as well as the ads make it seem.

From personal experience: It sticks just fine, & it'll last a good few years or more depending on the brand and how well you apply it. I use 3M 1080 matte (I've tried many other brands. Stick with 3M. I have shadowline trim on my window surrounds but only for 9 or so months now, and though it's holding up great I just don't have long enough-term experience to recommend) and just like with painting it's all about the prep. Only thing to watch out for are rock chips - I had a tractor trailer change into my lane once before I had time to slow down and create space. That ~15 seconds of pebble spray caused 20-30 little chrome flecks to peek through. Nothing major, but the only time it's been damaged and it was enough to make me want to reapply it. Took less than an hour each time tools down to tools up, and the second time I applied two layers.

Did you spray it while on the car and just tape off the grill mesh and surroundings, or did you remove it?

I was going to have a shop do it for $100 with a warranty to reapply if damaged within the first year, and 3 years if it doesn't hold up. Think that's a good idea? I haven't attempted to vinyl wrap myself. How difficult was the job?

It's pretty easy, and there are a ton of videos online that give good tutorials. My first experience was wrapping my entire Miata by myself, and I didn't feel overwhelmed at all. It needs to be done in a warm space, as vinyl gets stiffer and you'll have trouble with adhesion if you try to do it when it's very cold. It might help to get extra and practice to get a feel for the wrap and how it handles and is manipulated when heated, and how to keep from getting wrinkles around curved edges.

$100 for the front grille with a warranty isn't terrible, but how good is the shop? Make sure you'll like the work they do. And don't forget that part of wrapping is trimming the excess, so do you trust someone else around your trim with a razor? Personally, I would say it's worth it to spend the time learning yourself, with the bonus being you'll start to see so many other things in your life that could do with some good vinyl wrap!

I had the bumper off for the timing belt, so I took the whole grill off and got the chrome part off by itself
