A4 B8 steering wheel buttons not working

Hi! I have an Audi A4 B8 -11. My horn, steering wheel buttons and airbag (according to fault code) stopped working.

I was driving around with this for a while when my buttons started working again for a while but not the horn and airbag. After a little longer the buttons stopped working again so I punched the center of the steering wheel and saw the lights on the button flickering. So when I pressed the horn (still not working horn) the buttons would work. And after pressing the horn for a while my buttons worked for like 1 month (still not horn and airbag).

After some research I found that it should be the clock spring, delivering electrical power through the steering wheel. So yesterday I changed the clock spring and the horn and airbag now works but still not the buttons. So now I’m guessing the buttons were a coincidence that they stopped working at the same time at the beginning and because they have worked separately from the airbag and horn while they were broken it should be a second fault right? So now I’m looking at maybe buying the buttons from a broken car or maybe the whole steering wheel, anyone who knows why only the buttons stopped working? No visible cable loose while stripping down my steering wheel, no fuse got fired up and airbag is working so I guess it has to be the cables around the buttons? Cuz there is a connector behind the airbag I could have pushed with the horn while I got them to temporary work.

Secondly my steering wheel angle sensor got a fault code after stripping down the steering wheel and airbag, I tried the method to start on and off and drive in circles and turn the wheel and all of that. My eyes bleed while watching fault codes (and my stability program doesn’t work).

    Thanks.

I had some issues with some climate control and MMI buttons not working, turned there was corrosion on the circuit boards and the tiny plastic rivets that secured the metal springs behind the buttons were broken.

I was able to fix the springs and all the buttons work, except for the climate control my AC will not turn off and auto on works on the passenger side.

In cleaning both, the previous owner spilled coffee / soda on both which led to the corrosion.

In your case you may need to remove the buttons and take the housing apart to inspect and/or perhaps need a new set of controls.

I don’t have any rosstech unfortunately, but my more expensive Foxwell can read out that the sensor knows 0° when it’s pointing straight and all other degrees seems to be working but there is still fault codes for no/incorrect basic settings. Still haven’t tried replacing buttons

Update: the fault code for steering angle sensor was no/incorrect basic setting. I didn’t find equipment to to the calibration but now everything got dead again and fault code B10001B: Airbag igniter resistance too high.
The clock spring was used so there’s a change it broke but it must have been caused by any wiring I’m thinking, any ideas?

Update agan: i ordered a ross-tech hex-net and igniter+wiring from a wrecked car and will try changing this (the wiring that goes from steering angle sensor I.e behind the wheel to airbag and buttons). Will update you soon. Also saw a video of loose contact behind the clock spring that I will investigate soon.

Inspect your steering angle sensor connectors behind the steering wheel for burnt pins. I have replaced a bunch of Steering angle sensors before for this exact issue.

If so, do I change the wiring or both wiring and my new clock spring if it’s wasted again?

If the female pins in the connector are damaged then yes, just inspect for burn marks.

Solved: it was the clock spring, the used one I bought broke very fast or I damaged it, handle them with care and DONT move them or count etc. I bought a new third part clock spring and noticed that the issue all the time was that the coding was gone when I could use VCDS.

This is how you should do the repair: connect vcds and get the coding from the module, I think it was called lenks module and had coding 00000017 (don’t know the exact number of zeros but you can read it there), 00000..16 is common also at least on B8. If you on the other hand install a genuine used clock spring from an identical car the coding doesn’t have to be done. If any further questions, don’t hesitate.
