    Hello Guys,

What is the difference between the A4 3.0 and the S4 3.0 apart from visually. I've so far found out the engine is the same but what about suspension, brakes, drivetrain (crown gear differential) does it have the

    sport diff option?

    Cheers.

For one, the 3.0T in the A4 is only 272hp, not 333hp like in the S4. The rest, get your PR codes list. That'll tell you what you have.

    Lol what? What A4 came with a 3.0t? The A4 had a 3.2 V6 in 2009 only model. The rest 2010 and up had only a 2.0t.

Not in the NAR market, but RoW market B8.5 A4 had a 272hp (200kW) 3.0T option. Engine code CMUA till mid '14, then CRED from mid '14.

Yes that’s right. We had the CMU 3.0T supercharged A4 in the Australian market also. But they were rare.

The USDM (NAR) market seems odd, the B8.5 A4 for some reason never got the 2.0T Gen III TFSI CNC (165kw) engine from 2013-onwards, when everyone else had. They were stuck with Gen II CDNC all the way up to B9 2016

It's not cheap to certify a new engine combo through all the gov't bs here. No doubt AoA felt no competitive necessity to undertake the cost to provide a higher quality engine any sooner than necessary. It's not about good product, it's about just good enough product. Good ol' America.

Duh, there’s already an a4/a5 3.0t in the NAR, it’s called s4 or s5. These are obviously with s line package and sport suspension plus some factory tune. Point is, a4 3.0t is not in the NAR because it would cannibalize the sales of the s4s and s5s, and Audi could not charge a premium for them because these would be “just an a4s”.

How do you figure this is only an issue in NAR but not the rest of the world when most countries got both the A4/A5 3.0T and the S4/S5?

Afaik, b8 3.0t sales were very small in many ROW countries because a) there’s a very tunable 3.0tdi b) 3.0t is outside of the favorable tax bracket (< 250hp). In that situation different a4 3.0t trim levels probably wouldn’t cannibalize from each other because having different hp outputs also means different taxes:

It just doesn’t make sense to bring the same car but with slightly lower output to the US, who would buy a car with 272hp if they can have nearly the same car for nearly the same money but with 333hp.

Yeah, i suppose catering to the market demand.
But that still doesn't properly explain what i mentioned before, as to why the USDM/NAR consumers only had the choice of A4's with GEN II 2.0T 155kw all the way from 2009 - 2016. When majority of the world had the A4 with the CNC (or CNCD) 2.0T 165kw from 2013 - 2016. As you may know, those engines were less prone to problems, number of improvements such as combined port & rail injection to help with the carbon build up issue etc.

I suspect fast was commenting on the thread topic of the A4 3.0T. My comment was regarding the EA888 Gen3 in the US. There's no reason AoA would not have moved to the EA888 Gen3 unless Audi AG didn't have the Gen3 volume to spare (as I understand, we were not the only market that carried on with the Gen2 for B8.5), did not have the US compliant emissions ready for B8.5 release, or, most likely, AoA just didn't want to bother with the cost of the change (or AoA together with Audi AG) and figured leave it till the B9 release.

On the 3.0T, again, costs. I mean, it's VAG. 100% of everything is cost based. A 272hp 3.0T A4 would have filled between the 211hp 2.0T and 333hp 3.0T nicely. They did it for the Q5, but did not for the A4 because of one thing, business bean counting and would it have made enough money to bother with it. It does become yet another set of parts for repair, etc.

perhaps Audi didn't know at that time that gen 3 will be less problematic than gen 2?
