    Exhaust Camshaft Solenoid Connector

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
I recently managed to snap one of the 90 degree elbow connectors that clip into the exhaust camshaft solenoids. The short term solution was crimping on terminal ends that fit the pins of the solenoid.

Long term, I'm trying to replace the whole connector so it can be easily detached as intended. I already have a new housing: https://www.ecstuning.com/b-genuine-...pin/07p973702/

But am still looking for the terminals themselves. I found these, and they're close, but not an exact match. Can anyone lend some insight?
    https://www.wirecare.com/category/co...-tin-16-20-awg

I've looked into buying a few of the connectors off an engine harness that someone is parting out, but that seems hard to come by/no one has responded to my inquires.

It's probably something like these, MCON 1.2 terminals.

Thanks Smacc! The ones shown in the ebay link are the exact ones, however that seller doesn't ship to the US.

Expanding the search led me here: https://www.ebay.com/itm/Qty-24-000-...8AAOSw7I5a6Jbb

Digikey carries the PN, no picture, but since it's 10 for $2.01 + 4.99 first class mail, I'm going to give it a whirl.

That looks like the same connector housing - the description shows it including 2 female terminals, but doesn't show a pic of said terminals. If the ones from digikey don't work, I may give it a whirl! But at that point, I'd much rather get someone to clip off a few from a harness before guessing and spending more money

Since we talked about a possible Vac leak earlier, and because I'm still seeing ~19 in Hg idle in neutral, I smoke tested the entire system last weekend for quite some time, and couldn't find anything. The only thing I can think of is that by having the IE manifold, the vac lines normally running to the flap controller are now disconnected and could be sucking in excess air even though I have tape over them. That didn't occur to me while smoke testing, but I'm going to see if clamping down on those lines with vice grips will bring up the vac reading.

034 mounts were installed at 89k which is what first revealed the rough idle issue, and IE manifold wasn't installed until 92k.... now at 104k I'm going crazy chasing a few inches of Hg.

Smac, if you have any suggestions, PLEASE chime in

To follow up, the terminals from digikey worked! The notch is a little different, so they press fit into the connector, and a depinning tool is not enough to remove them. Buying the pack of 10 worked out because it allowed me to see what worked best for crimping and inserting the terminal into the connector. The pink retainer did not fit, however, I'm not at all worried about these terminals ever coming out.

From here, I opened up the wire shroud and crimped on this new pigtail to the existing harness. Doing so allowed me to hide the crimps, and then I applied electrical tape around the wires from butt connector to solenoid connector.

If anyone else ever has to do this, I'd try the link OG provided since the terminals are matched to that connector. Just make sure to save the 90-degree housing from your old one! The process would probably go a little bit smoother.

Are all (8?) the same or different for A and B (found that VCDS at least names them different in their (VCDS) codes)>

Oh, I'm saying you can get them on eBay and Amazon and Aliwhatever if you search by the connector p/n. A lot of them will be preloaded with pigtail leads, and you'll see they are all China quickies. Audi doesn't source them that way, and TE doesn't produce them that way. But they'll work fine in most cases I would expect. My concern would be this is an "exterior" connector, and making sure the "single wire seals" are on the wires is something to confirm.

There's also the different pin systems, MQS 0.63, MCON 1.2, MCP 1.5, and they never say which pins they installed on these preloaded connectors. Not that Audi says what pins are used with a given connector in a given usage either. Most likely, they have the correct terminal type as I'm not sure how much variance the connector allows for pin type.

The parts catalog says half the harness connectors are 07P973702, with the yellow center. Google search that, and an interesting Amazon listing comes up.

    https://www.amazon.com/Connector-07P...0D1KJZ6TY?th=1

Notice it has four variants, with and without wires, and clearly presents 702 vs 702A (the key slot is not in the same position). So be sure to get the non-A or it won't fit.

The other half have the black center connector, 4H0973702A. Same key slot under pin 1. But you'll notice the pins are turned 180° relative to the release tab. This is why half are one way, and half are the other way, so the right angle turns don't run into each other.

    https://www.amazon.com/Connector-Rep.../dp/B0BW8PT4YM

So yeah, all over the place, just have to know the connector p/n to search by.

And the right angle cover is 8K0971921. I assume there's something about the cover that it can go on the connector only one way? Otherwise, why not just use the same connector for all eight.

    IMG_1443.JPG

Notice how the release tab is on different sides depending on if the right angle needs to turn left or right. All the solenoids are the same re pin 1 and 2. So to turn the release tab around, the connector pins have to be inverted so they still match the solenoid.

    Thank you much!
So far I ordered what I could find (and had short delivery times; a lot from Europe were excluded for that reason), but all are STRAIGHT (using the part number I found on the connectors which is 7806793 to search).
I will check out the ones you highlighted (the "A").

    https://m.media-amazon.com/images/I/...L._SL1500_.jpg

I assumed the straight can be used either way, but now have to go back and check if the ones I ordered are the right ("A") orientation.
Update: Not really sure how the broken one is supposed to look like, only see orientation of the 'good' one.

    https://drive.google.com/file/d/1sYH...ew?usp=sharing

Using the part number also brings up one of the ones I ordered (straight): https://www.amazon.com/Connector-Rep...e%2C170&sr=1-5

I'm not sure I follow what you're saying. None of the connectors are right angle, that's the cover (8K0971921) you're looking at. https://www.oemvwshop.com/8k0971921-...e-cap-p335143/

As I said, four of them are 07P973702 and four of them are 4H0973702A, and all eight of them use 8K0971921.

"7806793" means nothing to me. It's not a VAG p/n.

All your amazon links show the key slot being under the pin 1, so they will work. But they are also all the same thing, 4H0973702A. Notice the pin 1 is on the same side with the release tab up in all cases.

Notice in your Google drive pic, those are the 07P973702 (yellow centers). Notice the key slot is still on pin 1, but pin 1 is now on the "other side" if you turn the pic over so the release tab is on top (so it's oriented the same as the Amazon pics).

You should be able to reuse the right angle cover if you can get it to release without breaking. You can see the securing tabs in that Google drive pic.

Oh, didn't know that its only the cover that makes it 'right angle'. The number is the only number I found on the connector. And it does come up as a manufacturer number, that is how I found the ones I ordered. Not a VAG number, no (none is on the connector as far as I was able to find out). I did not take a photo of the one I need, so can't tell where the slot should be; will do when I get to the car again. For the time being, hope the ones that are on the way (or at least one of them) will fit.

clip one from a junkyard if theres any near you. could also try calling one and seein if they will fulfill a request to clip one of those. The VW ones will work as well. I did the same thing and my buddy had a VW harness and we just cliped it and connected
