    Connecting Rod Bearing Colors?

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
There appears to be color codes not only on the main bearings but the connecting rods as well. I can't seem to find the color code for the conrods anywhere. The part numbers I pulled from the conrods are all the same but no indication of color. 06d-105-701a and b. Any idea where else I should look?

I can tell you in the b8 (E888) they were all yellow.. I called the dealer and they confirmed only one part number available for that engine.
Perhaps it's the same for the EA113 ?
call your dealer and ask. They will know.

Also the different colours have different part numbers. If you have the part numbers you are already there...

colors indicate the different bearing sizing etc. If you replace them you need to put the same colors back in.

Correct, but the underlying question is where can I find the color code for the conrods?

Unfortunately the color is all but worn away. I can see an faint outline but not a color. It looks yellow but it could just be the oil. The repair manual for this engine doesn't indicate a color at all on the conrod bearings.

I called Audi and they say it came with yellow bearings. The part number doesn't match up though.

Part number provided by Audi: Bearings - Audi (06D-105-701-K-GLB)

Part number stamped on the bearing: 06D-105-701-A (Upper with hole) 06D-105-701-B (lower without hole)

I'm waiting to hear back from them but it looks like yellow will be my color. Fracking confusing!

close to what Audi quoted you , all 8 were the same with no holes and they just clip in.

No doubt, I went down that rabbit hole for a couple of hours and just decided to pick up the phone and spoke to my local Audi parts guy. After getting routed to another guy we figured it out.

LOL, sorry so he confirmed that the one I needed is indeed not going to show up as "Fits your car" but he assured me he was looking at the same "manual" an assembly person has and then gave me the part number. I'm good with that. Now I wait for it to arrive.

    New bearings ok, or not?

    Could I have your opinions:
    DSC_0168.jpgDSC_0169.jpg
Got these bearing in, and they seem damaged to me.
I would expect a smooth finish, or at most a dull grey for bedding in.
I have already started a return but am new to bearing swaps so not sure what is 'normal' and what isn't.
    Thanks in advance.

They look like they have no coating at all . There is no way those came from Audi.

Never saw a coating on factory B7 2.0T bearings, plain aluminum alloy bearings. Things that look wrong to me are they have tangs on both shells and no oil holes.

Here’s a pic of a couple of OEM connecting rod bearings that I just took. There is some type of “sheen” to them for sure. Not sure if it’s a result of polishing or if it’s a coating. Also note that mine have tiny scuffs and scratches but nothing I’m worried about. I did have a main bearing that came in with burrs and a gouge from something sharp. That’s more concerning.

The sheen is typical of them, no coating. The appearance of the mains changes depending on color code. That seems to be something to do with how they are machined to hit each size grading. I have had lots of issue with scratched and dinged bearings from Audi. They seem to pack main in bulk and let them ban into each other. Curious did 06D-105-701-K-GLB come as a set or was that an individual shell? Also, as far as I know the color coding one showed up on the later 2.0T (timing chain version). It would be interesting to measure shells. Along the way the later model engines got of the forced pin oiling.

Mine came mostly in cardboard boxes holding two each, back to back from Genuine Audi Part. Others from ECS and FCP came in clear bags or similar boxes.

Sorry the coating must have started in the b8 e888. No holes or tangs at all in those. And I would have thought they were the same as the b7 but I guess not 20210207_191444.jpg

Thank you all for confirming what I had thought.
I didn't mention these were for an A6 C5 with the 2.7t engine, because I wanted to ask a thread that was recently alive.
Popped onto KOLBENSCHMIDT's catalogue and shall be getting them, as I believe they are the 'RheinMetal' OG for the VAG!

    Thanks again.

Oh stubbled across this deal from a Uk ebay seller and have got two sets of 12 febi rod bolts for under £9 a set!!
Thought as oemepc shows B7's also have the same bolts, you might be interested too.
    https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/12x-Febi-...72.m2749.l2649
If anyone needs them being sent further afield than Europe, happy to oblige. shall weigh the ones I have and then you can choose delivery service.
Just such a deal, I feel selfish having them to myself!
