    R8 + RS5 for RS7?

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
Having a hell of a time deciding whether this is the best move for me. I have a 2019 RS5 and 2018 R8 V10+ but ever since driving a 2016 RS7, I've always wanted an RS7 as a daily driver. I bought the RS5 several months ago and I like it but I miss the V8 (and I was coming from an AMG E63). The updates to the new generation are substantial but I'm not super thrilled with the sport exhaust--previous generation sounded better. Also, the RS7 has no flat bottom wheel and no massage function for sports seats, both things that my RS5 have.

I also have an R8 that I've had for 2 years and only put 1500 miles on. I rarely drive it, but whenever I do, I know it is a special car but dumping almost $3300 a month on something I rarely use seems a little too much.

Which brings me to my current dilemma. I'm considering trading in both the RS5 and R8 for the 2021 RS7 and consolidate the garage a little. You guys think that's crazy? This would be a good opportunity to trade the R8 since the Audi dealership is willing to take it at a decent price (some dealerships don't want such a high priced item that will have trouble selling). In addition, trading both would save me $12k in taxes on the RS7 and my monthly payments would go down by almost 2k, which is an added bonus. And being able to drive the RS7 every day would be awesome, instead of occasionally for my R8 (usually in spring and summer).

But I love my R8 and that's why I'm having a hard time deciding. I don't tend to keep cars very long, so realistically, I would sell the R8 in a year if I don't go this route so I'm only really getting 12 more months out of it (approximately 750 miles). RS5 has been a good car but like I said, I don't get the same sense of attachment as I did with the 2016 RS7 or the R8.

Other options like the E63 and M5 are possible but I've had an E63 and already have an X3M. Truthfully, I think M5 is the best of the bunch but the RS7 has better tech and looks better. Thanks for the help.

Hey! My humble opinion, you’re in a good spot, but I do get it. You love to have the weekend car and the daily driver. I just got the RS6 and I can tell you, you won’t be disappointed with the RS7 as a daily driver. It’s really the all around car for daily driver and performance. It may not be as quick as the M5C or the E63s but it looks the part. Now you won’t get as many notices with the RS7 as the R8 but that’s more of a personal choice. I also totally understand the need to go back to the V8. Once you go V8 it’s hard to go back to anything else. The sound is amazing. I’m a guy that keeps cars for a pretty long time so for me, choosing the right car in the long term is important. If I was on the latter side of getting new cars more frequently then it wouldn’t be difficult for me to sell/trad up cars for newer models. Keep in mind the tech is starting to change pretty quickly in cars as well so who knows what the next 2-3 years will bring. I mean look at the E-tron gt, now that’s car of the future. :) Hope this helps and keep us posted on your decision.

Have you driven a 2021 RS7 yet? The new generation is heavier and bigger than the last, even though it has more power. It's also a little more quiet. You should definitely try to test drive before you make this decision. It is fast, but it is big and heavy. Of course it will be less sporty than your R8, that's obvious, but it will also feel like a much bigger car coming from an RS5. I came out of a '14 S4 and really notice a difference in cornering, etc- even though the RS6 is stupid fast. Not saying it's bad- I've had an S6 before so understood this- but it is different.

ETA: You can add a FBSW after market easily.

Thanks for the comments. I have not yet test driven or even seen the car in person due to limited production supply and Covid restrictions. I'm thinking it should probably drive similar to the E63S I had, especially in corners, since they compete, although I do think it is a little slower and heavier than the AMG. I will definitely test drive it before taking delivery. The exhaust from what I can tell on YouTube is pretty pathetic, even compared to the RS5 which cracks and pops on dynamic/sport mode pretty easily but the V8 grumble is there.

    Definitely will require more thought.

The 2021 RS7 is a significant upgrade over my 2016 C7 RS7 and the sport exhaust note is definitely louder than the C7. With the new four wheel steering the updated car feels much more dynamic than the one it replaces. Even if it's a tick slower than the E63/M5 you will never notice but if that's important, a simple flash or piggyback quickly fixes the concern.

My vote is to keep the R8. Special car for sure.

Here is my .02 as I just sold my fully loaded RS5 in Nogaro and am now in a 21 RS7 Nardo.

I far prefer the RS7 to the RS5. I really missed the V8 in my RS5, it was fast but lacked the balls if you know what I mean. Maybe the RS5 handled a little better around corners but the dynamic setting was way way too bouncy and you could just feel the road and every imperfection whereas the RS7 even on 22's and lowered is still buttery smooth. I like the look of the RS7 better, having power close doors, air suspension, new infotainment and just an overall bigger car. Yes not having a flat bottom steering wheel is a little disappointment but you could easily remedy that with an aftermarket solution if you really need it. The massage function on the RS5 was a joke, it was only a 3 stage massage and felt like someone was randomly poking your back, IMO you are not missing much. Now on my wifes SQ7 its a 5 stage massage and more substantial but wasn't even useful in the RS5.

Now selling the R8, if you can trade them both in and save on taxes and save $24K a year in car payments when you don't even really drive the R8, its kind of a no brainer to me.

Thanks for the responses everyone. I agree, massage in RS5 is a joke and my AMG massage was much better.

I think I'm going to take the plunge. I will likely switch out the summer tires for all seasons (my X3M has winter tires on but as we get down in the teens frequently in the morning, summer tires won't do). Planning on going 295 instead of the stock 285 on stock rims. Do you guys think spacers will fit that arrangement? Want to do like 10 to 12mm spacers to make it look more aggressive. Thanks.

I traded my R8 and 911 C4S for the RS6. I liked the r8 but didn't love it. Day to day usability is not great. RS6 replaced the need for the C4S all weather capability.

    Absolutely love the RS6.

I’m on 295 and there is plenty of clearance for some spacers!

Well, I took the plunge today. I won't be able to pick it up until Wednesday morning so I can take it to my detailer on the same day to get clear bra, tint, and ceramic coating before I put some miles on it. Will likely take him 1 or 2 weeks to complete it. I'm putting 295 all season tires on stock rims and I got the Pirelli Scorpion Zero All Season tires. They seem to have gotten good reviews. I'll put spacers on there once I figure out the best distance.

I will miss my R8 and RS5 but at least I know the RS7 is the latest spec and latest/most advanced technology they offer. I had a 2018 E63S and while that car was fast, it looked like a regular E class. The RS7 just looks better even though it may be a little slower.

This car has everything I wanted, except maybe the carbon ceramic brakes, but to be honest, the price increase for those brakes is not worth it. Nardo gray with carbon optic package, B&O Advanced 3D sound, Alcantara headliner, Executive package, Driver Assistance package, sport exhaust, and carbon twill. Dealer wouldn't budge from selling at MSRP. It's only been on the lot for less than a week, probably would have sold soon if I didn't get it.

Thanks everyone. Do you know what spacers work with the RS7 and RS6? I can't seem to find much of anything but that may be because the cars are so new the compatibility tools are not yet updated.
