    Ea888 Gen II 2.0T CDNC - engine rebuild - recommendations/guidance needed

    Hi All,

I am currently facing an Engine rebuild after catastrophic cylinder damage. (unknown cause at this point, but will update the findings when its made known).
This is the first time I've experienced and had to go through with this mess.

Firstly, will aftermarket forged internals, such as Con Rods & pistons cost less than OEM AUDI/VW?
I assume a new water & Oil pump, timing chain & tensioners, would be generally included in the standard overhaul.

Im currently not in the financial position to go all-out and splurge and replace everything, but in the interest of avoiding future unforeseen problems. Are there any other parts that should be replaced whilst undergoing this big overhaul, e.g Fuel injectors, fuel pumps, fuel reg & cam followers etc?

Also if it will offer me a bit of future-proofing and a bit of flexibility if i decide to keep the car; e.g if the K04 wears out, with a forged rebuild, i could pair it with something larger w/ a custom tune etc.

whilst the engine has been separated, I've been made aware that the current engine Mount & transmission mounts at around 70,000mi is starting to look worst for wear,

    Cheers again

    So let's do basics
Are you doing this yourself ? Or will have to pay labour ?
What caused the failure will determine course forward..
Ie bent valves is different repair route then exploded piston and rings..
So you can't determine anything untill you get to route cause
Parts costs: do your own research. You will learn a lot.

If you are not doing the job yourself, a known good used engine may be less costly than a rebuild.

    agreed

also it depends on your objective ... if you just want to overhaul an get it running again OE parts should be fine, i did mine myself, i " splurged" on OE parts and did not put any Chinese knock off parts in my engine. Becasue i wanted parts i could trust.

I also had no plans to do any engine mofifications that would require the use of forged pistons/ rods or any other of those more expensive parts.

a fully loaded piston for my car was 109.00 from an online retailer .. so for 500 i had new Audi pistons/ rings rod bearings and bolts... with no hassle.

btw i have never heard of a CDNC engine , what is it exactly ?

never mind, found this great article.

    https://www.motorreviewer.com/engine.php?engine_id=119

should be pointed out there are mistakes in it so it is not from a reputable source, but it does give a good general description of each engine.

CDNC is what I have. Considered to be the most likely to have the oil consumption problem, like all of them. Solid otherwise. Not too well-known for the camshaft issues, but has lot of early-version parts bolted to it that are prone to failure (ie: bypass valve, early version tensioner, early intake manifold, rear main, etc. Some variations compared to others, denoted by the letters, when the oil jets turn on, etc. I have the CDNC also that was just rebuilt. If you fix the oil consumption and do the other stuff while you're in there anyhow, like the above and the water pump, this engine actually can be solid.

In this post, I discussed the Kolbenschmidt slotted rings and gave the ECS link to the Kolbenschmidt pistons that have them preinstalled. I'd just get those, rather than messing with removing the old rings and putting the new ones on. I believe the grooves on these are machined to accept the slotted ring that not only has better drainback, but is developed with more tangential force to aid in the scraping and maintain the oil control over time, rather than deteriorating. Unless you're going for big power, that's what you're looking for or to use the stock and put new rings on. You'll be using the Kolbenschmidt slotted if you reuse your pistons due to the groove size, but modification may be necessary.
