    2006 A6 headlight issues

    Seeking help.

    My passenger bulb was dying-turning pink. Had both bulbs replaced. There was a slight flickering in the passenger side. Now, with new bulbs I have the following issues;

    1) Drivers side intermittently stops working. There is a slight infrequent flicker on that side now.

    2) Passenger side. Sometimes the high beam will not come on at all. When on, and turning the steering wheel while driving (doesn't happen when parked) the light will click on brighter and lower-but not the high beam engaging/disengaging.

    My local shop 'thinks' I need entirely new assemblies left and right for almost 4K in parts and labor.

    Seems that this is a chronic issue with these cars.

    Anyone have a solution? Ideas? I'm ready to throw this car away over this...

    Car is a 4.2 with 87,000 miles.

    You may need new ballasts. Chrysler sells one that will work.

    I agree with QIKRNU. Sounds like ballasts. My AFS headlights were similarly screwy. Mine got fried last year after a battery drain and careless jump. New ballasts were the key. I had mine repaired by Phil (fly3kgts is his handle if I recall correctly). New ballasts are $300-ish. Phil repairs them, strengthens them, and guarantees them. I think he charged $150 per. He’s a licensed radio operator, so he has access to the special components.

    Also, your shop is ROBBING you if they want $4000. You can get reconditioned ones for $1000/ pair or new Audi ones from Lithuania for $600-$800 on EBay. Aftermarket ones are like $250 each.

    If you have a set of Torx screwdrivers, 1/4” ratchet set with extender, jack and jack stands, you can do this yourself. You need to remove the bumper to access the headlight assemblies, but that is far easier than it sounds. If you haven’t done it before, it will probably take you about two hours. Up to four if you go slow and referencing some how-to materials. If you need help, the forum is awesome, and I can probably help as much as could be done via messages.
