    TPMS fault, Intermittent AC

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
So I went to drive my car on lunch today and I got a TPMS fault. There was also a code for the ambient temp sensor. When driving the outside temp goes blank from time to time. The AC will also intermittently work. I scanned the car and have codes for a few different control modules. I’m thinking maybe I need a new battery to start with, but I would appreciate any insight someone might have about the codes that were present. Don’t mind the headlight codes, I unplugged that and started the car and forgot to plug it back in.

I would suggest new battery as well, but first thing I would do would be to clear them all and see what comes back over a week or so. Could be climate module for AC, not sure if that is where the ambient temp sensor feeds into as well, but possible.

So I replaced my battery this evening and cleared all the codes and I’m still having issues. I ran the 3 measuring blocks to check battery health and here is what I got. battery.JPG

My question is since I just put this in should I assume it will need to charge while driving a bit to give me an adequate assessment of what my issues are? For group 19 does 99% aging mean it’s only lost 1% or the car thinks it’s shot? I got the battery from the dealer and programmed in the new BEM code.

Clear the codes and see what comes back. No point posting known noise.

If the outside temp is going in and out, could be the sensor. Or could be the circuit. The G17 outside temp sensor has two wires back to the J519 central electrics control module (address 09). One is the power supply to the sensor, the other is the ground line to the sensor. But a number of sensors share that same ground: brake fluid level sensor, windshield washer fluid level sensor, and engine coolant level sensor. So if you're not having errors from those, it's likely the G17 or the plug to the G17 (maybe it's not fully clipped into place?). There's nothing to tie the G17 to all the other electrical issues in the scan as posted.

As for the TPMS, did you get a fault? Or did you get a warning? Because there's no DTC there.

There's nothing to tie the G17 to all the other electrical issues in the scan as posted.

As for the TPMS, did you get a fault? Or did you get a warning? Because there's no DTC there.
The outside temp is going in and out and now it’s reading way off when it does read. I’m leaning towards a bad sensor as I just double checked the connection and I don’t have errors in the other systems you mentioned.

For the TPMS I get an actual fault. I didn’t see any codes either but it’s there. It’s a bit odd because when I start the car every once in a while the fault will go away. This is why I originally thought battery as it was 8 years old and I know the car can do strange things with a bad battery. I’m wondering if there is a loose wire/ground somewhere that could cause this.

I actually stumbled on another thread where someone had similar faults that you responded to. You mentioned the home link module potentially causing an issue if there was a loose/broken wire. I did recently have the bumper off to do the water pump/pcv/tstat/ and carbon clean. These issues didn’t start happening till about 3-4 days after I completed the service though.

You don't say what MY you have, but unless it's MY09, you don't have actual TPMS sensors. TPMS in the MY10+ is indirect TPMS, meaning it just uses the ABS/ESP module and it's various wheel speed and vehicle acceleration sensors, as well as steering angle, to surmise if a tire is flat. That's why a problem with confidence in operation of the ABS/ESP control module (address 03) might yield a TPMS fault. But the ABS DTC you have says "J285 instrument cluster is unhappy, I'm sad", and the J285 just says "J519 central electrics is unhappy, I'm sad", and the J519 just says "right headlamp not connected and this G17 is flaky as hell", neither of which should the ABS system care anything about.

But you do seem to have a steady low voltage, one freeze frame from Nov at 11.6 and two freeze frames from Jan 7 at 11.6. Lot of short drives? My AGM was still good after 10 years, but my drives are all 5+ miles. Not sure why your voltage is only 12.0v. Blocks 18/19/20 are about the battery, 21/22/23 are about energy management, and 14/15/26 are about the alternator. And 1 is the term 30 and term 15 values. When the engine starts, you'll normally see the voltage go into the 14s, and then get down into the mid 13s as the battery state of charge approaches 85%, where the car doesn't try to charge it further. Are you seeing that during a drive? Or is the drive so short, the battery SoC never returns to 85%?

    The percentages are 100% (new/full) down to 0% (old/empty).

On the HomeLink transmitter J540, that subject probably came up because the person was having issues with the air quality sensor G238 or refrigerant pressure sensor G395. They are all on a LIN bus, so problems with one device could interfere with the communications with the other devices. The outdoor air temp sensor G17 is not a comms device, just a simple signal device, though it does share a ground line with other sensors.

The car is a MY12. It’s funny you mention short drives as my commute to work is only 5 miles round trip. The screenshot of blocks 18/19/20 is right after I replaced and recoded the battery last night with ignition off. I was surprised to only see 44AH as the rating is 110AH and it was a new battery from the dealer. I couldn’t find a date code so I’m curious how “new” it actually was

This morning when I started the car I had no errors and the ambient temp was reading correctly. I’m going to rescan this evening and see what is still there for codes after clearing last night.

The Ah on mine has never been close to the quoted value, even right after replacing the battery, it was only 2/3s the quote value. So not sure how it computes that, but it seems irrelevant. That said, 110Ah is not an AGM, the AGM would be 105Ah. And 44Ah does seem way down more so than I would expect. But is the 110Ah non-AGM the part number encoded into the battery adaptation? My J533 always seems to read .1V or .2V low for term 30 compared to other modules. Does a multimeter support the same voltage value when you read say across the two jump start posts under the hood?

As you have VCDS, you can pull the history data from address 19 (CAN Gateway) and see if anything looks particularly interesting in it.

Yeah the battery is non-AGM and I coded the battery to the car immediately after install. I’ll have to test with a meter later today.

I left work just now to grab lunch and when I started the car all the errors with the TPMS fault and blank ambient/no AC were back. It’s strange that they will randomly come and go.

    TPMS fault, Intermittent AC

So after clearing and re-scanning here is the general idea of the issues.

    Address 01: Engine
Sees issue with G17 Ambient air sensor

    Address 03: ABS J104
    Sees issue with J285
This ABS code does not return immediately after clearing

    Address 5 Acc/Start Auth-J393
    J393 sees issue with itself

    Address 08: Auto HVAC (J255)
    J255 sees issue with J519
    J255 sees issue with J285

    Address 09: Cent. Elect. (J519)
J519 sees issue with G17 (outside air temp sensor-electrical fault in circuit)

    Address 17: Instruments (J285)
J285 sees an issue with J519

    Address 46: Central Conv. (J393)
    J393 sees issue with J285

I’m not sure if these are related to my issue. I upgraded to 3g+ MMI and they might be related to a coding issue. The antenna code is because I never hooked up the antenna when I swapped everything.

    Address 5F: Information Electr. (J794)

I'd replace the G17 sensor and see where it goes from there. There's clearly a problem with it or the wiring between it and the J519.
For builds after May '11 (such as MY12), it should be https://parts.audiusa.com/p/Audi__/A...Z0820535B.html

Replaced the G17 today and everything seems to be back to normal. Cleared the codes and will monitor over the next few day
