Car manufacturers already research this sort of data. And your guess nailed it for top 3. That is exactly why when you go to a car lot the top colors you always see are black, white, Grey and silver. With red and blue being nearly identical tied for 5th place. Trucks vans tend to have white as #1 best seller, cars tend to be black for #1. It varies from year to year but not much.

And lime green calipers? Yeah, way down the list hehe

I agree with you in terms of over the industry but each manufacturer have different demos. For instance Ferrari wouldn't show anywhere near that standard, with red being #1 by far. Porsche probably have their own individual three. Wondering if Audi stretched the norm in the same way. Jaguar and Range Rover both share a special edition SV blue that's so desirable that you cant find them for sale ever because they get sucked up by buyers in minutes.

I think this is my 4th black car. Had 1 white and 1 don’t think I would own another. Will never own the Nardo Gray in any thing.

Would like to have a blue something eventually. Really like the brick red type colors myself. Coming out of college I had an arrest me red car that I still avoided cops with. I would never own yellow or most orange colors no matter how popular that may be. I think the Mitsubishi Eclipse orange would be the only orange I would consider owning.

When we bought the A7 I wasn’t looking for black but I was specifically looking for non white and would not entertain the brown or cream interior.

Of course this is my choice in colors which may not be your choice. It’s all personal preference.

Nardo grey was really nice and exclusive on sport cars. Another day pass by a Toyota dealer and saw a lot of “girls-in-college” RAV4 in a similar grey. Overused that and getting no point.

Nardo Grey should be called Battleship Grey. A huge thumbs down.

My question was directly related to which colors are more sought after on the secondary market.

Your response is pretty much exactly how I felt about "me too" metallic gray that you like. Which goes to show you that sometimes its best to respond to the question asked instead of providing your opinion. In other words, because you dont like Nardo mean squat as to whether other love it.

I have no proof but I can almost assure you that Nardo is more desirable of a color than gray metallic if for no reason that there is one Nardo for every ten plain grays available for sale. Nardo is certainly rarer, but to your point that may be the very fact that drives the desirability. A call to any Audi dealership to ask which of the two colors would move faster off the lot on two cars sitting side by side.

Yeah, Ferrari only produces a handful of colors normally, not to mention their production numbers are FAR LESS than Audi, so using them as a comparison isn't really fair. Red white black and yellow would be their colors most often. Sure, you could get a custom paint color on a Ferrari, as you can with any car... I was only stating that manufacturers research what sells best, and that's what I listed.

As far as "secondary market" or resale market, I haven't seen any data, but it would be safe to assume it would mimic the primary market of new vehicles. Especially since what colors are sold initially is going to almost always be what determines the car colors for sale in the used market. Less than 1% of consumers have their cars painted aftermarket. So whatever color the factory painted it, is almost always going to be the same color the car is sold when used.

Hey goof - I never once asked for anyones opinion did I? No, I did not.

My question is answered by data. But I do agree with you that we stick to the question.

Again, just because in the car industry, certain colors are more common, would mean anything in terms of resell of your used Audi. Even within Audi, because more cars were sold in a particular color doesn't necessarily mean that if you were trying to sell your car, if your car were a popular color it would sell (faster, for more money). I'm just saying its not that cut and dry. Lets say black is the most popular color...I know many enthusiasts that only want black cars and wouldn't consider another color. Just as common is the buyer who detests buying a car thats the same as every other Audi on the road would would jump on a Nardo or light blue for no other reason than owning a car with a custom, one-of-a-kind coloring, explaining the popularity of wrapping.

Because a color is rare doesn't mean it is not desirable. If the dealer orders more black/white cars trying to anticipate the customer, they will eventually sell because customers settle for what's on the lot as opposed to waiting for their car to be built.

Several years ago I was looking at an Aston Martin. There were two, one black, one China Gray. The gray one was selling for $5k more for no reason other than the color, given that black is a more popular ciolor but the gray was a much more exclusive color.

The bottom line of your original question truly will lie with the purchaser of the vehicle. What is considered desirable is purely subjective. While someone may be willing to pay extra cash for a merlin purple S6, I never would. So selling a less common color is simply a matter of finding the right buyer. Like that ugly af S6 in the youtube link posted, it's definitely a rare color, but rare doesn't equal more value necessarily.

    Agreed.

Personally, I wanted Nardo or white, with B & O. Those were my dealbreakers. But lucky me, of course, the one I found lacked the optik. I almost passed - but the car had the best Carfax I've ever seen on a vehicle. It scored like a 97 or something crazy. A half a day at the wrap shop gave me the Optik I needed. Buying used can be rather tricky if you know what you want to end up with.

Yeah buying a used audi is like navigating a forest of options. You did same thing I did, decided what were must haves and what wasn't as important. Then search for a long time.

I find that the opposite is true. Audi is good at lumping options into packages vs other makers where they do individual check boxes for more customization. I prefer the way audi does it because I find that a lot of people have some bad taste if you're buying on the used car market.

for me it was the performance options and carbon fiber inlays. Also, optics were a strong point. the original owner paid 3999 for the nardo paint.... that did not translate into a higher sale price.

No nardo gray for me, I like silver best, and I have had several bright red vehicles over the years, 1998 Z28, 2002 T-bird.

My friend has a bright red S4, and you can see that thing miles away, wow very bright. That one is too bright for me, a cop magnet for sure.

I'll spare you my sticker, but in 2016 the S6 was only available in Nardo with Audi Exclusive ordering.

Mine was 1 of 27 AE color orders for NA that year.

Not every model gets every color. In addition, sometimes not every model year gets the same colors on each model.

Nardo Grey and its various names is becoming popular. You can get a Honda Civic with a color that looks like Nardo Grey. Not so unique anymore.

Nardo grey isn’t really special when every manufacturer offers clear coat over primer

Nardo grey isn’t really special when every manufacturer offers clear coat over primer
I got Nardo in January of 2018. Now I see it everywhere and it’s frustrating. The reason I picked that color is specifically because it WAS rare.

Speaking of clear on primer, my son and I made a back-up car when he was in boy scouts years ago and we put 3-4 layers of Wurth’s clear over primer.
