Rear cross traffic assist if you have driver assistance package is what I think of. It happened to me twice but gear did not change. Try turning off the parking assist and see if you can reproduce the issue.

The rear cross traffic assist is activated when the parking assist is turned on. ... are different levels of warnings: visual, acoustic and a short jolt of the brakes.

Im fairly confident you can disable the braking function but still have all the other warnings.

I tried having the dealer disable nthis feature and they said they couldn't.

Mine would trigger for no good reason.

I would love to disable that breaking feature. When I'm reversing into a tight spot it slams the brakes and scares the crap out of me.

By any chance.. Do you rest your hand on the stick shifter? Maybe when rear cross traffic assist engaged and it slammed on the brakes in reverse the hand resting on the stick shift inadvertently pulled the stick shift back into neutral? I've had it pop into neutral on me when launching and resting my hand on the shifter..

Its the back up traffic assist. Its happened to me where its picked up something on the side thinking it was moving and slammed on the brakes. It usually works, but every now and then it has flukes. So far mine seems to work okay

    You don't need it

The cross traffic alert (whatever it's called) is standard and uses the same sensors as the blind spot monitoring. The DAP is a totally different sensor in the grille

Auto slam of brakes for no obvious reason in reverse. Yes me too... very annoying and jarring.

Counting on it still to work when I DO need it though.

System has never placed the car into NEUTRAL

I have my “pre sense” warning set to “late”. On the mmi it also shows little radar circles to the rear. I basically never get reversing intervention. Do you guys getting intervention have your pre sense to be more sensitive than late.

this has happened to me exactly once, when I backed out of my garage faster than I should have. does this always happen in the same place, or anything similar about the occurrences?

It will stop if it "thinks" you are about to back into someone's path. The point of the system is to detect cars coming down the lane when you are backing out of a parking spot. So, any time it detects something it believes is a moving car it will warn you, and if you don't stop or it feels the need to stop, it will. I've had it activate once or twice for seemingly no reason at all and another time because I had an empty garbage can off the side of the driveway . So who knows.

Yeah, I am aware of how it works - I was wondering if the OP has noticed any similarities when it triggers in his car. For me, it must have picked up my wife's car that was parked on the other side of the driveway the one time when I backed out of my garage too quickly. Nothing was actually coming in my direction, or in the path of my vehicle.

This happened to me in my 2019 Rubicon crossing the George Washington Bridge into NYC on the lower level. Not going in reverse, but the same thing happened where the truck slammed on the brakes and the instrument cluster displayed 'BRAKE BRAKE!" The only potential damage was my shorts.
