    Evap readiness failed/incomplete

I posted this yesterday in the c7 forum but no responses yet. I know this one is quite a bit more active for the 3.0T so figured I’d try here too.

So I had my car tuned just about a month ago, and have driven about 900 miles since then, mostly slow commuting with maybe 75 highway miles mixed in. Out of curiosity I checked readiness with vcds about a week after tuning and everything was ready except evap, I did some quick reading and found that evap can take some time to show readiness so I didn't give it too much thought. I checked again yesterday, and sure enough, evap is still showing "failed or incomplete." Most of my drives are short, I've probably only done 3-4 trips since the tune that truly got the car to full operating temp (i.e. oil temp above 180ish) but I do commute about 5 slow miles, 5 days a week so it has had many on/off cycles. The last few weeks have been fairly chilly, somewhere in the research I did I thought I read that there have to be a certain number of on/off cycles over something like 39 degrees F which if true, that could be part of the issue. Full vcds auto scan shows zero codes.

Tune is APR stage 2, my understanding of their tunes is that they do not alter the emissions system, and frankly if they did I'd expect to fail readiness on catalyst or o2 sensors. Is it common after a reflash to take this long to show evap readiness when everything else showed ready within a week or less? should I be concerned? I am not up for inspection until next July so I have time to figure this out.

    From VCDS:

    Readiness Status: 0000 0100
    Exhaust Gas Recirculation: Passed
    Oxygen Sensor Heating: Passed
    Oxygen Sensor(s): Passed
    Air Conditioning: Passed
    Secondary Air Injection: Passed
    Evaporative Emissions: Failed or Incomplete
    Catalyst Heating: Passed
    Catalytic Converter(s): Passed

    Thanks!

I find it takes a while to set especially in the colder weather (winter time). You will need to have at least 1/2 a tank and it needs to go through a proper "drive" cycle. Can't remember the proper process for drive cycle but you can google it.

Wow that’s specific. It’s been a month and about 1,000 miles as of today, checked after running some errands again today and evap still failed/incomplete. I’ll just keep driving it and hope to have that cycle done by next July when I need a sticker lol

Knowledge is power😁. You can drive all day long, if you don’t hit that sweet cycle, it will never be ready. From where I live, it doesn’t required emission readiness. I just do it for the fun of it, once you complet the cycle and you see emission ready, it’s satisfying 😌

Yeah I knew there were certain conditions that had to be met, but I’ve generally read that 1/2 to a full tank of gas worth of normal driving should clear everything up. Didn’t realize there was such a specific order of operations. Actually given how specific the conditions are it’s amazing that your average driver ever hits it without trying to.

    Appreciate the info!

Try clearing your codes even if you don't have active CEL. Then get on the highway and drive 120 miles straight.

No codes (full vcds scan), no lights, only way I can see anything is checking readiness, all is green except evap.

In CA you are allowed to have the evap readiness monitor showing not ready/failed and still pass. May be the same where your located.

I searched around a bit for what is allowable in MA, could not find anything definitive but I did find some document that suggested evap is the only one that is allowed to show not ready, so maybe I’d be fine. Not due for a sticker for like 8 months so I’d imagine I’ll be good by then, I was really just wondering if this could be an actual issue with the car. Since there are no codes or anything else, I suppose I’ll just check periodically and try to do the drive cycle next time there’s a warm day when I can get to an open bit of road so I’m not forced to stop at a red light and restart the sequence.
