    Audi S3 DSG issue

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
I've had my 8V S3 for almost a year now. 2016 with 44k miles & CPO. First month of owning it I noticed it was very rough coming to a stop in both D and M. The 2nd to 1st downshift was always weird.. D2 would flash once or twice before going into D1. I asked around a few FB groups and friends and was told by many "DSG is always a little rough because its basically a manual trans."

I had the car for about 6 months before flashing it to stage 2 (93oct high torque & DSG flash). This whole time the D flashing would randomly happen. If I came to a complete stop easily and gave the car plenty of time to downshift itself it wouldn't do it. If I had to come to a quick sudden stop is when I'd notice it a lot more. I figured the DSG tune would help the overall functions of the DSG (Better D everyday driving, while also making S better). I'm not sure if I started noticing more, or if I just starting thinking of issues before my CPO warranty ended.

I had a DSG flush & DSG adaptation done at my work that is an Audi/Porsche dealership. Still noticed it after the flush and my friend also drained out 7qts not 5, not sure what this would affect. I'm very cool with my service department and we all knew it was tuned. Audi unfortunately asked us to send log to have it repaired under warranty...TD1. I'm not too mad because I only had 1 month left. My work is thinking its a mech unit but they're also saying there's a small chance it needs a new DSG. I've tried finding videos or anything of the same issue and haven't found anything. Most mech unit issues result in not being able to drive and having a bunch of codes. My car has no codes at all.

Has anyone on here replaced the mech unit? Has anyone heard of or personally experienced D flashing randomly? I'd much rather it be a mech unit and will lean that direction first but if I need a new trans that's going to suck after paying for the mech unit.

I don't post on AZ much anymore, seems like FB groups have taken that away but hopefully I can learn more about what I'm experiencing.

Was the S3 tuned before you got it?

I see allot of people buy these cars...tune'm...abuse'm then return'n at the lease end. I would pull the oil pan and have a look at the shifting unit.

TVS overseas seem to be the only DSG place knowlegable

have same same model year S3, bought it second hand with only 3,000 miles and put about 20,000 additiobal miles on myself. The 6spd DSG has worked flawlessly. So like previous reply, I suspect your DSG was abused by previous owners.. how many launches?

I bought it CPO so I assume it was never tuned. I know it wasn't tuned when I bought it.

I actually never checked. I have friends that have Carista and OBDeleven and need to figure out if either one of those can check launches.

I really want a simple stage 1 tune and some bolt-ons for my '17 S3, but damn stuff like this makes me think I should really wait out the 2 years of factory+CPO warranty that I have left...

Different trans but what you are talking about is exactly what I was exping with my S4 DSG. Its a different trans, but I lost the mech unit and the gear selector sensor in it. EXPENSIVE to fix. That DSG trans was the reason my S4 was such a POS and the reason I got into the S3.

Anyways, my S3 is the same year and similar mileage and its super smooth. Occasionally I will have a rougher than expected shift from 1 to 2 when shes cold and I by habit swap it into manual mode. But when I leave it in S mode and pull out of my driveway and down my street the 1 to 2 shift is fine. My trans is stock tuning, never felt the need to upgrade it as its a daily and it shifts basically when I want it to 90% of the time and even during spirited driving.

I can get the mech unit replaced at my work.. since I got TD1 flagged they’re helping me out and covering the labor part.. means it’ll cost me around $1600. I just don’t want to throw $1600 into it and the new mech unit not fix the issue. I never see posts on mech units or DSGs going on S3s. Shitty situation.

It's not the mech unit trust me, the s4 I know had issues with the mech but not the Audi s3 honestly just do a google search. It's only on old cars. I had the same issues with my s3, and it ended up being the clutch pack. It's amazing too that the people at Audi don't know shit about transmission but what they told me was they are not trained on repairing the trans because they usually just replace the transmission because of labor cost to open up the trans. I fixed it myself in the garage just using youtube videos. I also added a wave track since I was going through all the work. Anyways car drives amazing now the clutch pack is like 500 dollars. I would hate for you to buy a mech and find out its not an issue

To properly diagnose...the DSG has to come out and everything visually inspected.

    Then worn, broke parts replaced.

Unless cost is too high and a complete replacement is less costly than parts.

Don’t see myself putting a used trans in my car. Who’s to say I’m not going to have the same issue within a year? I’m either doing a mech unit or paying $5k for a new trans.

Before you do anything id highly suggest you bring it to a shop to see if they can figure out exactly what is wrong. I know of a great shop by me that helped me with my horrible B8 S4 DSG Trans exp, but I am in MA.

I had that issue on my 2016 Audi s3 where it would hang for a while when downshifting from 3rd-2nd. I changed my engine and trans mounts to BFI stage 1 mounts and it's never happened again. My stock trans mounts were so bad that I could easily move it with my fingertips with minimal force. I would change mounts and see if that helps. Finally, if you install the BFI mounts the right way and align everything properly the NVH is not even noticeable at all.
