so i am seeing more gesi high flow cats offered in downpipes lately.

do you guys see any reason i should opt of a gesi version with the higher price tag or is it not really worth it?

Did you read the previous post?

Especially the part about the EPA cracking down on such items?

So if you read through the spec sheets, pretty much all GESI Gen 1 and 2 High Output and Ultra High Output catalytic converters are EPA complaint. If you also note that OBD2 catalytics will throw a CEL, I assume means that EPA compliant products do not. If I understand all of this correctly, this means that GESI EPA compliant products replace factory converters and remove same amount of impurities to not trigger a CEL. To me this sounds like you should be able to pass emission testing.

I started the thread to confirm this with anyone that might be using a DP with GESI UHO or HO catalytic.

I know of 3 DPs for MQB that use GESI.
    1. COBB - High Output cat per product page, should be EPA compliant
    2. MAP - Offers GESI option but does not specify which one is used. They charge about $280 more for it. GESI HO and UHO cats are about $300-400 range. So if you assume that default sport cat is about $70, we can infer that GESI option is for HO cat rated for 350-500 hp. I tried to contact MAP to find out which one they use and did not get an answer.
    3. AMS - From product description page, “These GESI brand 300 cell count Ultra High Output (UHO) units provide virtually no disruption in flow providing emissions control with no notable loss in horsepower.” This should be EPA compliant cat. It be good to know if the DP will fit 8v cars. Per AMS, DP is for Golf R only, but MAP has 8v cars on the list of applications. Not sure who to trust here.

I’d pay $1000+ for a DP with GESI cat, if it means I won’t have to worry about failing emissions testing.

If you read Cobbs web page: https://www.cobbtuning.com/products/...-a3-quattro-8v

It states the key factor in all this:

Tuning is required when installing an upgraded downpipe,

Tuning is often what makes these pipes not throw a CEL...

I would be asking the supplier of these products if they pass emission tests.

Yes, I think all of the DPs state this. I think it’s a known fact that you need to “tune out” the CEL, but I think the tune is also needed to adjust for higher exhaust volume with a bigger DP. You see the term “over boosting” mentioned when running bigger DP with the stock software, but I don’t know if that’s an actual problem with the 8v cars or just internet talk.
