    Q7 2.0 Reliability?

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
Hey everyone! First post. My wife and I are looking at potentially picking up a new 2021 Q7 to replace our 2013 Honda Pilot. The Pilot has been great, very few issues and does everything we need - but it's loud on the interstate, has a little shake to it, and frankly... it's been 8 years - Let's face it - the new stuff is just way nicer.

After some looking I think we've narrowed down to 3 options:

    1) Q7 Premium Plus (Galaxy Blue + Exec Package) - Leaning towards the 2.0 engine since it's less expensive, it's for my wife, and it's still faster than our Pilot. It also looks like it'd be STUPID easy to work on with all that room under the hood.

    2) GLE 350 - Same story with it's 2.0 4 cylinder

    3) Keep what we have since it'll run forever

What's everyone's experience with the reliability of the late model Q7's? Is the 2.0 sorted out at this point? Are there still oil consumption issues? How about the rest of the car? Holding up well? Tech working fine? I just don't want to go from old reliable to a dealership service bay queen. I'm a DIY guy and did the t-belt on our Pilot, oil pan gasket on my E90 BMW (drop the subframe), and countless other t-belts and projects.

    Thanks,

    Brian

I've got both a 2014 A4 with the 2.0T and a 2014 Q7 with the 3.0T. I've had absolutely no oil consumption issues with my A4. It seems that Audi has fixed that problem in the B8.5 models and newer. I wasn't aware that you could even get the Q7 with the 2.0T. I know it's available with the Q5 and lower, but they're smaller and lighter cars. I've had zero problems with either car, but we're both retired and only put about 10k on each one per year. We had a 2005 A6 3.2 that we traded in on the Q7 and never had a single problem with it either, but I don't think my wife even hit 100k miles on it by the time we traded it in a couple of years ago. Like any other brand of car, Audis have their own set of problems, but overall they're pretty reliable. I think they were voted the most reliable European brand a couple of years back and may still hold that honor.

We have over 25k on our 2018 Q7 with the 2.0T. It needed an oil topoff prior to the first service. It was a qt low. It hasn't needed another topoff since. I am guessing now that the engine is broken in it doesn't burn as much? Either that or it wasn't full to begin with?? No other maintenance issues..... unless you consider the occasional random issues with the Infotainment system. I think you'll see that with any of the new fancy dooda's.

We even tow a ~3000lb camp trailer/toy hauler. I'm amazed how well this little engine pulls this trailer. The only thing that would have been nice is perhaps the air suspension. But I'm not sure if that is even an option with the 2.0T?

The big motivator for me was the price difference. More than $6500!!!! They practically gave away the Q7. Well, comparatively speaking. LOL. Apparently everyone want's the big motor. The fact that this one is Argus brown may have been a factor. Seems everyone in this town wants white.

I already had an S3, so my wife thought she needed to join the family. We traded in her 2011 CX-9. This Q7 is on a whole nother level. You can't go wrong with the Honda. But the Q7 is a nice upgrade if you ask me.

Hey, it's only money. Happy wife, happy life. ;)

Great feedback! Thank you so much. Glad to hear it can even tow. I'm assuming you're doing 10k mile oil changes? If so 1qt low isn't bad at all, especially at break-in. I'm with you on the cost difference with the V6 - it's kind of steep... but also it looks SO easy to work on the 4.

My wife has a 2017 Q7 with a little over 50k miles. She has 3.0, but I wanted to note there have been only two problems with that vehicle, which is well used (i.e., we cram stuff into it and drive it everywhere..).

    (1) the front brakes allegedly made noise and the pads and retaining clips were replaced under warranty.

    (2) the MMI would sometimes disconnect from her iPhone. The “operating system” was updated under warranty.

Otherwise is been as reliable as our prior Honda vans, but I “feel” that would not be true at well over 100k miles simply because we had such outstanding experience with the Honda’s and I fear Audi’s older reputation..

I have 2018 2.0 that just turned 50k miles. What JWebb said regarding brakes, there is a TSB regarding the brakes so the replaced it last week. I have been hearing squeaky cracking noise in the front left when I turn the wheel at low speed but they can’t reproduce it, you know how it goes with noises, it never happens when they drive it and they think you are crazy. There is a TSB for control arm bushing and I suspect that’s what’s making the noise so we’ll see. Other than that the car has been great, no issues at all.

My brakes started squeaking less than 10k miles, they told me brakes are fine so I kept driving, I changed fronts when the dealer told me to change it and they started squeaking 5k miles after that, they just replaced them last week again. There is a TSB for 2017s to change the pads but not for 2018s. I’m on third set of brakes at 50k miles. I want Audi to change the bushings, I first reported the issue at 3k miles and it has been in service for the same noice 7 times. At this point I asked the dealer to give me the price, get it replaced and then I will take It up with corporate to get reimbursed.
