Help replacing fuel pump control module / updated: still fault code P3089 :(

Hello everyone, looking for some help with my car :(

    ----
    UPDATE (03-11-2020):
I replace both the fuel pump and fuel pump control module, but I get the same code with one difference
    Before:
6170 - Signal Line for Fuel Pump Electronics
    P3089 00 [173] - Electrical Malfunction

    After:
6170 - Signal Line for Fuel Pump Electronics
    P3089 00 [165] - Electrical Malfunction
    ----
    ----
    UPDATE 2 (03-11-2020):
I feel like an idiot. Fuse was ok, so I didn't bother to check if the module or pump had power... They didn't....
I checked in detail the electrical schematics and got power up to the fuse at least but not into the fuel pump control module, so the problem is at some point between the fuse and fuel pump control module wiring.... I'll continue my search tomorrow...

At least I got a new fuel pump
    ----
    2011 Audi S5 (B8) Sportback (3.0T)
I got the following fault code:
6170 - Signal Line for Fuel Pump Electronics
    P3089 00 [173] - Electrical Malfunction

According to what i could find, i need to replace either the fuel pump or the fuel pump control module. Since i had to import replacement parts, I took the safe option and bought both fuel pump G6 and fuel pump control module J538. Parts haven't arrived yet, but I tried to remove the fuel pump and control module in the meantime following the workshop manual. No problems removing the fuel pump, but I can't take out the control module, it doesn't fit through the gap.

The only thing I can think of, is to remove the white threaded ring (just don't know how)... According to the manual, this shouldn't be necessary, but I don't see other way around it. On reddit someone recommended me to lower the fuel tank, but I think that is a bit out of my league right now.

Should I try to remove the ring? If so, how? If I break it, the only replacement i could find was from china and i'll have to wait a few months for it to arrive, so want to avoid removing the ring if possible. The procedure should be the same as of Audi A4/A5 from the same generation.

    Thanks !

The sheet metal there will flex enough for you to pull it through. Use a small piece of wood or something similar to pry slightly against the sheet metal and it will come out. Don't use something sharp on the end as you will be prying against the fuel tank, it is thick plastic but you still want to be careful.

Thanks. I didn't want to pry against the fuel tank, so I ended up pulling the sheet metal up by hand while my dad pull the module out. It worked.
Parts should arrive tomorrow, so I hope to get my car finally running again with this replacement :D

When you slide it back in you'll have to use one hand to kind of hold it up close to the bolt holes so you can get one of the bolts/screws started to re-fasten it in place. Not too tough though.

Bad news. I just replace both the fuel pump and fuel pump control module, but I still get the same fault code with one minor difference

    Before:
6170 - Signal Line for Fuel Pump Electronics
    P3089 00 [173] - Electrical Malfunction

    After:
6170 - Signal Line for Fuel Pump Electronics
    P3089 00 [165] - Electrical Malfunction

    Any ideas? :(

Sounds like you are narrowing it down but try to trace the wires from fuse. Your B8 has the fuse in the left side drivers fuse panel is that correct? On the B8.5's they put it in the trunk closer to the Lift Fuel pump.

Yes, it is in the driver's side panel. Tomorrow I'll check both ends (fuse connection and fuel pump control module connector), I hope the problem is there, otherwise I'll have to start removing interior trim to follow the wire.

    Fixed!!!!!!!

I bought the car a few month ago, and I didn't know that the previous owner fitted an aftermarket immobilizer connected to....... the fuel pump.....

I removed the immobilizer wireless key from the car without knowing (it looked like a cheap key finder), that was it... well... i got a new fuel pump and filter at least hahhaha

Congratulations, sad that you had to go through the hassle of everything but like you said, at least you have a new fuel pump and filter. By chance did you cut the old filter open to see if it was very dirty inside?

No, I didn't. I was thinking on selling the used parts since both work.
