    Flywheel dual or single mass?

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
    Hello everybody,
Has anyone replaced their DMF to SMF on 2.4/2.8 FWD engine? What it's like, is it even worth doing so? Recently my audi started shake/vibrate under acceleration. And always had this clunk and delay when letting the throttle go and back on. It's very noticable on stop-go traffic in 1st and 2nd gears. I checked all the mounts and driveshafts and everything is ok. Or should i just buy used or new DMF? The new flywheel costs a lot, over 400 euros. And didn't have any luck finding used one yet.

Single mass if you ask me, but I’ve never had the dual mass, as it failed before I owned the car—if that tells you anything

So you had the same C5 with 2.4? And it already had single mass flywheel? How was the gear changes, any out of the ordinary things? Like vibrations etc.

Yeah my car is a one-off 4.2 allroad with a manual swap from an s4). It now has a single mass lightweight aluminum flywheel and r-type jhm clutch

It is a tad chattery when hot, and shudders some when cold

Light weight flywheel makes it easy to stall

The dual mass you had is for driveability and smoothness. If you were to get a single mass steel and standard clutch, it would be heavier and more user friendly than my set up, but not as buttery smooth as the dual mass. Its more robust than the dual mass too. That’s my understanding

I may be wrong but the oe dual mass fails more on the high powered cars that get some abuse (s4).

Given the cost of the dual mass, I would skip it, but it would probably be fine for 100k miles on a N/A v6 if you are good to it

Thanks for your reply! I guess i will look into single mass flywheel conversion kit. As it's quite cheaper.

    Any time, pal

Let me repeat that I don’t have first hand experience driving the oe clutch or flywheel. All this info is dubious second hand knowledge

I'd just add that to be safest find a single mass flywheel that is ONE PIECE- Billet. And close to same weight as stock for best driving. Those lightweight units with the separate ring gear and friction surfaces aren't known for being really forgiving and driveable. Odds are they work well usually, but they can fail in ways that a billet FW can't, and if you trim weight you it can be harder to drive and have chatter.
