Before you commit the three hundred dollars find out which protocol your car is. If your car is UDS then don't spend the money, vagcom won't work as effectively and you won't even be able to go into basic settings or do tasks like changing your rear brakes and run simple adaptations. It's severely limited compared to use with non UDS audis. Go to equally "effective" solutions that work with your smart phone and are less expensive.

I'm almost tempted to just give you mine if it wasn't for being able to the very least view an abbreviated list measuring blocks. That's all I use it for.

If your car isn't UDS just go to Rosstech's website and buy one. Keep in mind if you want to drive audi for more generations. If you don't see that happening then just get the cheapest version there or buy a used one from someone.

There are also cheap Chinese knock-offs that work just like the real thing.

You're asking here where you can find a counterfeit cable? No. Go buy the real cable. If you can't afford $200 for an extremely FAIRLY priced diagnostic tool sell the audi right now and go buy a honda and don't come back. There is NO other tool available on the market that does what VCDS does for $200 for ANY manufacturer. Not even close.

Where in his post did he say that?

You need to chill out kid.

He can do whatever he wants regardless and doesn't have to listen to any of us here that think we know what's good for him.

I wasn't a fan of OBD11 but I've heard they released a gen 2 that *might* be improved.

@OP as I just sold my allroad, I no longer have a need for my VCDS. If you're interested, shoot me a PM. It's the 3 VIN cable but I've only used 1.

It’s generally assumed that someone is looking for a cheap knockoff when this question comes up as people who are looking to buy a genuine cable go straight to Ross tech and don’t ask this question.

Your statement is in direct contradiction to Ross-Tech's claims. UDS is the new standard (2006?) which rerplaced older protocols. It is claimed to be more user friendly.

Completely incorrect. And the baseline cost is $200. Every B8 uses UDS, so still no clue where your UDS cluelessness involving a 12 year old platform comes from.

Then can you tell me how to go into measuring blocks or perform a rear break caliper release with it. I have a B8.5 for the record.

And they were introduced in 2009 and definitely weren't the standard. There are different modules that can be in the same year car.

VCDS can communicate fully and get things like basic settings for some modules and not the ones I need. For most advanced measuring values I get drop down menus instead and then I get no communication with when I try basic settings. It is what it is.

I stopped updating a bit over a year ago. To be honest I don't think anything changed for my year car. I have it on an old Thinkpad tablet that that sits in the trunk.

I was looking at the Carly app. It seems interesting.

Get the real deal. I have the wireless hexnet one from vcds.... Really wish I had the old fashioned cable. It’s a bit annoying to always update and you’re limited to 10 cars if you’re gonna do vcds coding

The new ones are limited to 3 now I believe. I just purchased one from Europaparts a few months ago.

To OP, buy the one COar is selling for $130. Unless you plan on coding more than 2 cars. You can scan for free but you need to register the VIN to do any coding or what not.

Just playing devils advocate here. But what difference does buying a cheap knockoff of a VDS cable compare to people buying Ebay turbos that are pretty much a knockoff of BW turbos? Not trying to start an argument. But you can say it works both ways, no?

Knockoff cables don’t give you full capabilities that the legit cables do, not does it give you access to the Ross tech forums or their customer support. You get what you pay for.

VCDS is the software, Ross-Tech is the company.

I have the HEX-NET because they didn't offer an upgrade to just the HEX-V2 from the HEX-CAN+USB. But it comes with a USB cable and I only use it cabled to my laptop. I've played with the wireless aspect of it, but yeah no. It exists if you need a means to read some values on the fly with your phone without dragging a laptop around. But. OBD11 is no VCDS, but VCDS Mobile is no OBD11. (then again, where is OBD11 with iOS? Apple makes trying to make iOS useful an absurd pita, just like the USB endoscopes with no iOS option).

They probably have an unlimited VIN option, but you'd probably have to ask. 3 VIN is pretty restricted. Especially if you're looking at used cars and want to do scans to confirm what you're buying. With several VAG vehicles across the relatives, 3 VIN is a non-thought for me.

Yes, I agree. If it wasn't for Ross Tech forum, I would have never figured out the proper coding to my rear view camera retrofit. For the record, I do own a genuine cable. So I wouldn't know how it is with non-genuine cables. Just seems like the ones out there could do the same thing.

The cable is just a cable. The point of the Ross-Tech cable is it actually implements the licensing. VCDS has no restrictions to installing it or running it. The check is when it talks to the cable and reads the authorization to use VCDS with that car. The HEX-NET is of course a bit more than that with all the wireless server aspects, but that's not relevant to the point here.

There are generic OBD cables, and you can use them with software that will use them. But VCDS, being Ross-Tech software, is going to say "where's my Ross-Tech cable".

On deeper reflection I see that this is a misunderstanding. I was speaking about a diagnostic software which connects to automoitive CAN via an interface (firmware PW) and you were on about a "wire". Different things then.

I just bought the new HEX-V2 cable to communicate with my 18 SQ5 and I can scan unlimited vehicles but can only do diagnostics and coding on 3 VIN’s.
I think they are trying to keep professional repair shops from using the consumer products for professional work
Not 100% certain but I think as the registered owner of my cable I can remove a VIN when I sell a vehicle and get to add another

I'm almost certain the reason why they did that, was because people were renting out their unlimited VIN cables for money.

When I registered my VIN with my cable, they said it can't be undone. I think you can just pay them to unlock it though.

i think you can still get the unlimited VIN "professional version" for about 700 bucks.

i got the 10 VIN one, just because it was worth the 100 bucks just not to have to worry about it as long as i own the cable, which i think is the intent. i have used 3 of them so far, my two cars and my buddies which he sold a month later grrrrrr...

but not a big deal as i have 7 left, i use just one more and the 10 VIN purchase was worth it.

Yes, it appears I am wrong, if you use up your 3 VIN's you pay $169.00 to get 10 VIN's, if you have 10 VIN's you can pay $169.00 to get unlimited VIN's https://store.ross-tech.com/shop/upVIN
