    S3 rear brake piston tool

    Anyone knows if a "special" brake piston tool is needed to compress the rear piston back into the caliper after the parking brake is put into service mode using either VCDS or OBD11? If so, do you have any recommendation? What service manual are you using for the 8V S3? Thanks.

    Yes, Amazon has a full set for around $30 or you can rent from Auto parts store.

    Thanks. I saw conflicting info regarding needing that specialty tool. Some say and showed that even though there are slots for the tool and looks like a tool is required, they were able to compress the piston without having to turn it in the process. I guessed it's just safer to buy or rent the tool since it isn't that expensive.

    I change my own brake pads.
    You do not need to rotate the rear brake piston, just compress it straight back in using a piston spreader tool like you would use on the front caliper.

    a. Parking brake off.
    b. OBDEleven: Brakes > Basic Settings > Start Lining Change Mode. Press and hold green check mark at bottom of screen. Listen for the EBC motor to run and retract the piston stops.
    c. Remove retaining spring, guide bolts, caliper and pads, compress piston straight back.
    d. Install new pads, caliper, guide bolts, retaining spring.
    e. OBDEleven: Brakes > Basic Settings > End Lining Change Mode. Press and hold green check mark at bottom of screen. Listen for the EBC motor to run and re-engage the piston stops.

    You just need to compress the piston after you retract the EPB. You can use C clamp or whatever other tools you have for it. The brake service kit from Amazon should also work as long as you use flat attachment that does not rotate the piston.

    This method is described in official Audi 8v service manual for a3/s3 which I can confirm working from experience and the only method I’d recommend after taking rear caliper apart and inspecting the piston mechanism.

    S3 rear brake piston tool

    On the S3 there is no need to remove the rear carriers due to the shape of the rear rotors - the hub portion is concave vs straight however on the A3 you have no choice but to remove the carrier.
