Isn't the K04-064 the wrong turbo? I thought that was the VW version and we used the K04-106. I could be wrong though. I honestly don't what the difference is between the 2, they just look like turbos to me. Pictures are pretty generic.

I believe that's the one Trap bought. Start following the Ebay K04 thread. There are ton of information on there already.

Yeah that’s the turbo I bought.

I’m only using the housing from it tho not the center rotating assembly.

This turbo will not work directly out of the box tho. The wastegate it comes with is the incorrect actuator. You can not get the flap to open up as far as it needs to without any preload on it so once it’s preloaded it opens even less

The housing seems to be good quality tho

Trying to figure out what forge wastegate would work on it

Price is definitely good which is why I had it port and polished and ceramic coated.

    $520 turbocharger
    $350 upgraded chra
    $250 port n polish
    $60 turbine housing coating
    $30 compressor housing coating
    $200 forge wastegate
    +
Plus shipping is what I’ve spent on this so far. Hoping I can install it soon.

If you're going to CHRA swap, is this a better option than the F23L? TBO seems to be sold out on eBay, but the F23L is everywhere.

I wouldn’t get TBO from eBay. They are heavily marked up.

So if you’re going to order from China might as well go to the cheapest source.

Considering the TBO won’t work out of the box the standard eBay turbo is probably a better option for most.

I picked tbo because it looks like my loba. Almost identical. Turbo muffler deleted and has Borg Warner logos on it too. Not sure it’s worth the extra effort tho

Ive had bad luck dealing with Alibaba by itself. I like the protections eBay provides and the $200 worth of eBay store credit doesn't hurt. I was more wondering if the housing was an improvement over the F23L. I'll need a turbo muffler either way. I was planning to do the same as you and get everything ported, polished and coated. Depending on your success with the forge waste gate, I'll probably go that route too. It'll be a while before I install a new turbo regardless of what it is.

I didn't mean to change the subject though. Sorry.

Hard to say it’s better without using it as is for a direct comparison to the eBay turbos. This thing comes with a 9 blade turbine that’s a bit wonky and 8/0 billet compressor wheel That has beautiful machining so probably not an apples to apples comparison.

PnP will definitely change the outcome as well as the cartridge I am running and the fact I’m custom tuned.

The f23l / k04-106 are more widely available and known to work out of the box on off the shelf k04 software.

TBO is unproven in that regards.

With all that said there are some advantages to the TBO housing. Because the muffler delete is removable it allowed a lot more thorough port job and a lot of material was shaved from that outlet

The seller is quick to ship on Ali and is a trade assurance backed seller

I actually applied for a full refund tho because it’s basically a non functional turbo out of the box

Packaging and fitment on everything else has been quality tho. It’s almost nicer than my real Borg Warner turbo 😂 since it came without a crack and the inner diameter on the muffler delete is 0.1” larger than loba before the porting

I plan to run the same CHRA as you, I'm basically buying a turbo for the housing. I didn't think about it preventing me from using an off the shelf K04 tune. I just figured it might not live up to its potential without a custom tune. I ran an APR 04 with an APR stage 1 tune on my Mk4 Jetta for months before I got around to installing the rest of the supporting mods to justify a stage 2+ tune.

You've given me a lot to think about.
