Front Grille Rings Emblem Removal ?

    Are the rings removable ?

I haven't found anything concrete if the newer ones can come off other than the prying tool method on youtube. I have the black optics package with the black emblems and the rings have a few chips on them.

Looking to replace them without having to pay a dealership to do it for me.

It seems impossible at first, but it is easier than it appears. I may have broken a coupe of the old clips and I had fish out the remnants.

The front rings were surprisingly (to me, at least) the most difficult part of swapping out all the chrome badges/rings to black ones.

The clips that hold the front rings in place are no joke. It's extremely difficult to get even a thin credit card or plastic pry tool behind the rings to pry them away from the grill without damaging the grill area surrounding the rings.

After a few failed attempts with different pry methods/tools, I ended up taking a slightly different approach. I dremeled a small hole into one of the rings, just big enough to fit a narrow metal pry tool. That gave me the proper leverage to pull the rings away from the grill enough to then use a plastic pry tool to work my way around the back side of the rings, popping one clip out at a time. Once you get 1-2 clips free, it gets significantly easier.

It allowed me to remove the rings without breaking a single clip and without damaging/marking up the grill area surrounding the rings. The rings are obviously toast from the hole I dremeled. But those were going straight to the trash, anyway.

    I hope this helps. GL!

Wow thanks for the replies. It has been a real challenge to not damage the grille in the removal process. I came real close to it so I had to stop because I did not feel confident in removing it without scratching something. There really is no way to unclip it from behind huh.

It's a pain, but it can be done. Just requires patience and applying more force than you might think. Just watch the youtube videos a few times - I was 95% successful in getting mine off with only one broken tab.

    +1,

I thought it was not going to come out, but it requires patience and determination & a fair amount of controlled force. I think coming from the bottom corner edge makes it a little easier.

Yeah the front rings were unbelievably tough. At least we know no one will steal them....

This is the best tool for the job PERIOD. If slides behind the rings with no issue, and wont marr the plastic receiver for the rings if you are careful. The metal pry does not bend at all no matter how much force you put on it. You can save the old rings by looking at the one you are replacing and note the position of the clips. Slid in the pry tool, pull up to create enough room to use a thin flathead to unbdo the clips. Do not use the screw driver to pry, it is guaranteed to chip away at the plastic that receives the rings.

Thank you to everyone for the replies. I managed to get the emblem off today without damaging the grille in the process with some pry tools I bought off Amazon. A few of the old emblem clips broke off but thats OK as there is a new emblem going on anyway and the main goal was to not damage anything on the grille. So it was a success and am now more confident of removal in the future.

    Thank you to everyone again.

Everyone can remove the rings. What about the little S4/5 emblem? No one seems to post about that removal.

Imo you have to be very mindful of not scratching the grill while you are removing the rings.
