    Coolant temperature too high

Has anybody experienced their coolant temperature getting too high? Had service flush out coolant and all. Still getting "Coolant temperature too high. Let engine run while vehicle is stationary." message on my instrument cluster.

Something i would do is leave it at the dealership and not take it back until fixed. If not under warranty, id look into changing the temperature sensor, if everything else checks out as good like the fan is running when its supposed to, the thermostat is opening etc.

I have about 44k miles. I have JB4, FMIC, CTS Test Pipes, Custom Exhaust, and Cold Air Intake. Coolant was flushed yesterday at dealer. I was told that it might be faulty thermostat

Sounds like the thermostat / water pump has gone. Very, very, very common on these cars.

Just had the same issue last week. Ugh. Seems to be trend the last two weeks with these cars.

I got coolant warning and when I popped the hood the coolant had slashed all over the engine bay with nothing left in the tank.

Towed it to the dealer and they said the thermostat was stuck therefore engine overheated and coolant overflowed from the cap! No areas of leaks from the coolant pipes.

I feel like performance has decreased since that event but dealer said they aren’t going to do any more testing to check. At one paint he mentioned temps went up to 300F...

Saw another guy on Audi world with a RS5 with the same issue last week.

I have 46k miles on the car btw.

*UPDATE* Thermostat has been replaced. Car got a software update. Temperature reading high but the actual temps are not high at all. Something to do witht the ECU thinking that the car is overheating but it isn't.

I just went through this exact situation about a month ago. There's actually a TSB on it. They changed the water pump, thermostat, and re-flashed my ecu (and erasing my APR tune in the process). Said it was good, drove 5 miles down the road and overheated again. Long story short, it ended up being the coolant control solenoid.

Hope this helps, good luck getting your car back on the road.

It will just read an incorrect temperature. Essentially, if the coolant isn't at the 90-100c mark (if in remembering correctly) then there's probably something wrong.

I was just reading this thread yesterday night. And today I turn on my car (2018 B9 S4 with 14.5k miles) and got a coolant error on the screen and said to turn off the car. I went in my wife's Q5 instead. Got back and attempted to turn my S4 on again and got no coolant error this time.. wondering if these are signs of the coolant issue you all are having... I have the 034 intake, CTS turbo inlet, ECS intercooler w/charge pipes and Detuk piggyback.. I will take a picture of the error next time.

For me, it started with a low coolant warning. I checked the coolant and it was good. Cleared the code and the it came back 3 days later with a low coolant error again and an overheating error.

    water temp or oil temp?

When i beat the shit out of mine the OIL temp goes to 235f-237f. The oil bypass to the cooler doesnt open until it hits like 250ish.......are you guys actually overheating or just reading high temps sporadically?

Is the coolant actually boiling off or overflowing?

I was concerned with temps until i read the manual and saw how hot the engine actually is designed to run oil temp wise. Normal oil temp is 176f to 248f.

Yes, I know these engines run really hot. However, my water temps were getting up 240F. The overheating warning flashed up and the dummy gage showed hot too. I didn't want to see if it got any hotter, so I shut her down and had the car towed to Audi. Not my problem, it's under warranty. My particular situation ended up being the coolant control solenoid, which regulates vacuum going to the water pump and controls a sleeve around the impeller. The solenoid was stuck in the open position which continuously pulled vacuum on the water pump causing the sleeve to stay closed and not allow coolant to circulate into the radiator. Audi techs changed the water pump and thermostat thinking that was the problem. After the techs contacted the engineers, they realized the coolant control solenoid was bad. Hope this cleared it all up.

No I get that, and he did say it happened after the 50k like warranty anyways. I just would hate to get the time at like 6k miles then at 40k have a similar failure but denied warranty over it.

It is actually called the switching valve. Pull off the vacuum (purple) line and plug that line. Leave the switching valve disconnected. See if your problem goes away.

Nominating myself for potentially "the stoopid question of the day award", but here goes: How do you guys know what your coolant temp is? Unlike the oil temp digital readout, all I see for the coolant is the silly bar gauge. Is there a deeper menu display that I'm not aware of?

The valve is the correct solution however the part isn't listed correctly under any part distributor and is nearly impossible to find.

The part number for the valve on the vehicle is 037906283. Which is listed as a secondary air injection valve on FCPEuro for $27. And you can also buy it from oriellys auto under interchange part number 667-108 for 149.99 and can confirm both parts are the same number, identical, and work.

Part 037906283 has been used in tons of audi/vw vehicles over the years but still says it won't work when you put in anything 2018+for a vehicle search this is incorrect and it is the same part for the 3.0 Turbo sq5/s4 (not supercharged)

Part is easily changed on top of the passenger cylinder head.

Is the thermostat hard to change on these cars? I think I might need one as well.

Edit.. the fans are going full blast as soon as I turn the car on and stay on for the duration of the drive.

Do you mind giving some quick instructions on how to change?

and i looked up the part number on fcpeuro but i couldnt find anything but i found this on audis site: https://parts.audiusa.com/p/Audi__/4...37906283C.html.

    Same thing right?
