    New Owner of a 2013 B8.5 Audi A4 74k miles, first day of owning it's giving me a P029

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
Was hoping you guys can help me out. Today was the day I finally ditched my old Chevrolet Malibu and joined the super awesome luxurious Audi gang. Well, so far I'm not impressed at all. So, I am hoping that this isn't a very serious/expensive fix. From what my Verizon Hum is telling me it's something to do with the turbocharger being underboosted, If anybody has experience with this error code please let me know your experience and any tips that solved it for you. I bought the fucking car "as-is, no warranty" so my last resort is going to the dealership for a fix. My friend is a mechanic but I won't be able to call him for a couple more days so I'm just hoping to get some peace of mind from this community.

I've loved Audi all of my life and couldn't wait for the day that I would be able to own one. It's just not going the way I imagined. :(

Also, if long time owners would also like to input what they had to fix after 75k miles, 100k, etc would be incredibly helpful as well so I can get an idea of how much to put aside for this car.

    Thank you.

I’m guessing it’s code p0299, you need to check for boost leaks. Also check the diverter valve, lastly check the wastegate for play.

You should probably take it back to wherever you bought it and have them deal with it and fix it. No point in you doing anything on a car you just bought. Unless you bought it privately, then my condolences.

He says he bought the “fucking car as is”. He’s probably buying a turbo soon or going back to Chevy.

Is this the "diverter valve"? or is that a different part? I took a look today. Diverter valve wasn't leaking oil. The actuator rod was working fine when I put pressure through a compressor. Cleared the code and I will see if it pops up after a while again, if that happens I will start taking apart the turbo.

I got in touch with my salesperson. Will see if she can work something out. Just kinda seems bogus that something would go wrong within 24 hours of owning it lol... Thank you

The N75 valve is the electronic boost controller, its just above the diverter valve, where that other connector goes.

lol I drove my car home from the dealer, 89k on it, and the water pump failed immediately. Took me a month before the dealer paid to fix it.

Hopefully I won't have to go back to Chevy :) love everything about this car expect for this one issue. I can see why Audi has such a passionate fan base, they ride so nice compared to what I've driven in the past.

So it was a dealer? They have a legal obligation to fix anything wrong with before 30 days or I think 1000 miles.

That was my initial thought was too, and im hoping that is the case. But after doing some research I saw that in the state of Minnesota if the car is over or 72k miles a dealer does not have to uphold that warranty. Again, its on the internet and who knows if it's true. I pray to God it's wrong. I'm just going to have to sit tight until my salesperson calls me tomorrow about what they can do. If they deny something like this I feel like it will just look plain wrong and not a good image for that dealer.

In California they'll take care of it no problem because you can sue them so hard.

Any dealer worth their salt should take care of this for you. Unless you bought it from those small independent dealers, then you're prob screwed.

I’m seeing used B8.5 turbos on ebay for around $300. If you can do the work yourself shouldnt be too bad.

They are different valves that are located right next to each other on the front of the turbo

Please search the forum first before bashing the car and looking for free advice before doing any research. There is a lot of experience on this board and willingness to help. Google the code p0299 and find out what it means and search the forum. Just be sure to either want to pay to fix, or do it yourself. Just as Flight930 and Traptalk stated, start with that. Those are basic maintenance. If tackling those two items are above your skill level, take it to a euro shop that knows Audi’s.

My 2013 came out code P0299 at 100K, turbo replaced and everything back to normal. As I read, those updated diverter valves and hoses should last over 100K miles, I think your one is the turbo wastegate issue. may cost turbo $1600 + labor.

You're right, I'm sorry I was just stressed out and felt like my old man was right about "those foreign cars are meant to waste money, yada yada", after collecting myself I started digging around under the hood. May or may not have fixed the problem, cleared the check engine light we will see if it pops up again. Thank you!

Ah okay, I think I know which one you are talking about. It was higher up into the engine bay, had the same color wire connector, I will look at it this weekend... What should I be looking for on it to know if it's faulty? Thanks!

OP, owning an Audi or pretty much any other German vehicle is a Love/hate relationship and your A4 is a great automobile but will need repairs you are not used to with owning other cars.

My 2 cents is when you have a problem don't fix it half ass, fix it right the first time and take your time diagnosing the problem before just throwing parts at it.

A few years ago I bought my first Audi (09 Avant) with 109K miles and cut my teeth quickly learning how to deal with the problems that came up and getting them fixed so I didn't have to worry about them coming back and like you within a few months of owning I was getting the infamous low boost code that eventually lead to me getting a rebuilt turbo and having it installed when my timing chain skipped and destroyed all but one of the vales in my head which allowed me the opportunity to replace the turbo and deal with the carbon build up in the upper intake. After that engine ran like new.

I drove this A4 to 150K miles and it put a smile on my face every time I drove it, you need to understand the ups/downs of owning an Audi and be prepared to deal with the problems calmly. There are some great resources to get assistance and advice from fellow Audi enthusiasts like this forum.

Diverter valve would be my guess given the mileage...operative word is GUESS. Thankfully replacing the DV is pretty easy...three bolts...takes 10 mins...if you're down there...get the modified one that's more whistlee...

My turbo was bad around 70k miles as well. So it's possible.

I was just pissed off, I’ve calmed down since I’m sorry I know it’s a great vehicle if anything it’s the dealer making it a terrible experience for me. I shouldn’t have to go repair a car after driving it 200 miles from the dealership.

I see you posted on the Audi subreddit. Hope you get your issue sorted out, keeps us in touch. I swear moonsoon grey A4s are cursed lol, my old car was exactly the same as yours and was a total nightmare, dumped it and got a manual S-Line instead.
If your dealer doesnt help, try Audi NA. They seem way more indulgent in the US than here in Canada.

OP, dont be pissed. there is still good knowledgeable members here to help/share with you, like "Smac770". You don't need to care unrelated post, we are here try to fix the car right at the first try.

P0299 is an infamous issue with our turbo, it mostly due to the wastegate loosen. B8.5 already has updated Diverter Valve and N75, it should last longer that why i think your one mostly need turbo replacement. As i read, most part on this part will still work fine except the wastegate will fail just matter of time. If your friend is a mechanic, just let him to scan and read the complete code.

I wont suggest to replace with any USED turbo, those used turbo also going to fail if wastgate havent enforced/repaired. Remanufactured one around $1K and Audi one is $1.6K. I think "cuda2000" has youtube video how to replace it.

Would I be able to hear if the turbo has gone to shit? When I took it to a mechanic I revved the engine and let him listen and he told me it didn't sound any different, we took out the diverter valve and it wasn't leaking oil or anything so we didn't think that was an issue either. Only thing we didn't do was take apart the turbo (which is probably what we should have done) I can't really feel a loss of power but my launch times are just a tad slower (within margin of error). We cleared the code so I'm just waiting for it to either pop up again or never pop up again, lol.

Also when we were monkeying with the turbo, we tried moving the actuator rod when the car was off and it wouldn't budge. But when we put pressure through it with a compressor, we could clearly hear it open and close and I visibly saw it move. So with my novice turbo experience it seemed like the actuator rod was moving the wastegate flap (that's how it works I think, right?) Normally...

Just really puzzled. Can't take it to Audi for an "official diagnosis" until the code comes back though. That was a mistake on my behalf.

I didn't hear any click sound when code came up (some said yes), also can't feel any significant power loss but i feel the RPM wasnt up smoothly as it was. Some owners remove the 02 Sensor and borescope the wastegate movement. My CEL came back around 20 miles after cleared.

So was that how you fixed your problem was replacing the turbo? Call me crazy but I really wanted to tune this guy to APR stage 1 with a cold air intake and catback but from the sounds of it before I even think about it I should replace my turbo...

Thank goodness I've been saving my money for years.
But regardless I am hoping the code comes back so I can chew out the dealerships ass. I shouldn't have to pay for this repair, the code came on 6 hours after picking it up from the dealer!

My one is earlier B8.5 (MY 2012), so i replaced DV(tested the old one still work correctly) and reset the code. Code returned after ~20miles. Basically my shop pretty sure it's the turbo, replaced a brand new audi one and everything back to normal.

If APR stage 1 is your plan, sooner or later you need a new turbo, it doesnt matter now or later. I dont chip my cars and read ppl will put K04 with chip.

The youtube link above should get you all about this infamous P0299.
