Shifting downshifting into 3rd feels hit or miss, my current method is letting the shifter center itself and then pushing up. However that's a little slower than sweeping up from 6th into 3rd. If i got this plate, I'd have to take a part the shifter anyway, so would replacing the bushings/bearing/selector help at all? Rather do it all at once.
The center pivot ball on the B8 is very robust and does not wear like it did on precision generations. The three weaknesses in the shifter assembly are the mounting plate, the slider bushings between the shifter base and the mounting plate, and the linkage pivot point up at the front of the trans. The shifter mounting plate comes with the slider bushings, so it knocks out 2/3 of the sources of slop. If you also get the JHM linkage, you knock out the last one, but it’s quite pricey.
You will be very pleased with the feeling of the shifter of you upgrade to the mounting plate or the ultimate short throw kit (mounting plate + short shift clamp).
