    Audi S3 8V Tuning, Wheel Stud Conversion Kit?

    Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
    Hey folks

    Ordered some aftermarket wheels, which I know the stock lugs aren't going to fit. Diameter of the head on the OEM bolts is too big. Knowing that, there are two solutions, one is the smaller diameter tuner lug bolts, another is the wheel stud conversion kit.

    In fact, I am going to order a set of stud conversion now because the bolts are becoming a pain to use without a pin.
    I also did some study of them. There are several advantages:

    1.They offer an easy way to align the wheel when mounting;
    2.They allow for the safe use of different thickness wheel spacers;
    3.It is compatible with both ball and conical seat lug nuts, which is suitable for most factory or aftermarket wheels.
    (Quoted from: https://www.bonoss.com/why-use-stud-...bolts-cai.html)

    P.S. These pics comes from Webs, I should post my tuning photos in the next post.

    I've been considering this as well. Are there any downsides to going with the wheel stud conversion?

    My shop recommended wheel hangers instead because he's seen some issues with some of the customers that did the wheel stud conversions. So I just ordered two of these instead and they work great! https://www.ecstuning.com/b-schwaben.../002840sch01a/

    That’s not the reason the OP is considering wheel studs. His new wheels won’t physically accommodate the factory bolt head which would necessitate the change to studs.

    I will say, the S3 being my first euro/lug bolt car, I like not having to worry about stud length when running wheel spacers. Running longer bolts is an easier fix than changing studs or running bolt-on adapter spacers.

    Should be one of those wheel hangers in the toolkit in the trunk?

    There was in my B7 A4 and my B8.5 Allroad. I am waiting on delivery of my '17 S3 but it better have the wheel hanger or else I'm stealing it from my allroad's kit lmao.

    Lug bolts can definitely be a PITA when doing removal/install of the wheels, I would prefer studs I think.

    As far as I learnt, there is no any downsides of wheel stud conversion. They are reversible upgrades. Can be remove if you don't like them anymore. Things to care are the quality, sizes, and the lug nuts' seat type. I would like a Titanium stud conversion kit, for I have learnt that Titanium alloys are lightweight but high strength.

    I also consider longer bolts. But each time I change wheels, I have to thread them out and then thread them in. It is a bit troublesome, especially when you need changing wheels on high speed roadside. Besides, the studs' length can be flexibly adjusted, for the stud conversion is normally longer. If you want to try different sizes of spacers, then you don't need to buy different length of bolts. That is what I really appreciate. I love the S3, now I just want to try studs, I should post my tuning work next time.

    The studs offer an easier wheel mounting method, I do like the function.

    Potentially they look "less clean" because of the stud sticking thru the nut - but with most OEM Audi wheels you will have the bolts/nuts covered.

    If I we're going to do a stud conversion I would look into a quality company like 034 Motorsports or similar.

    Surely, quality is what I care about most. Have checked the BONOSS company which offers several TUV Test Report of their Titanium Stud Conversion.
    (https://www.bonoss.com/tuv-certification). Or any other high quality Titanium stud conversion? Thanks for advice.

    Only plastic one included w tool kits. Buy a metal one for 14 bucks. So much easier with spacers

    Yes for sure, did not see that the ECS one linked was aluminum.

    Here are my 2¢... I made the conversion to wheel studs 2 years ago when I knew I was going to be auto crossing and tracking every month. It is just so much easier to change wheels with studs and not have to carry around different sets of bolts in various lengths for each wheel set. With that said, I looked and researched closely at what was available in the market looking for a product that would withstand the constant wheel changing and the abuse of the racing events but still be used on a daily basis. I quickly dismissed titanium because it didn't offer any advantage over steel studs but at twice the price. Just didn't make sense.

    My suggestion is, if you only drive the car on the streets and never race go with something like these:

    https://www.uspmotorsports.com/Racin...ical-Seat.html

    OTOH, if you do race or plan on racing in the future then bite the bullet and get yourself a tried and proven set of studs like these:

    https://www.rennline.com/Competition...LS06/2198|2214

    and save yourself some headaches.

    Racingline is what’s going on when I swap to winters. Had them on my Golf R, really liked them.
