    Brake squeak at low speeds...

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
So, I recently noticed a brake squeak, in what I believe to be behind the front passenger wheel. I currently have factory pads/rotors, which I believe were replaced just before my car purchase roughly 15k miles ago.

Recently, I started noticing the squeak primarily after a decent downhill drive (so they are plenty warm at that point). Anyways, the squeak appears to be at very low speeds (around 2-3mph) when coming to a complete stop but only with a light tap on the brakes. Heavier braking does not cause any noise.

Based on a quick visual inspection, all pads appear to have plenty of meat left on them. Rotors also appear to be fine. No issue with braking/warping of any kind otherwise. I’m wondering if this is a common occurrence on factory pads/rotors? Just odd that it’s been as of recent, but we’ve recently had hot weather, and so far I noticed it only after a downhill drive. No aggressive driving or hard braking prior to what I’ve mentioned. Any ideas?

Yes, factory brakes like to squeal like a mofo. I went with akebono ceramic pads to get rid of the squeal.

Hasn’t happened to me before, other than when they were cold last winter.. but I previously read that cold is a common issue. This just came out of nowhere about a month ago. I’ve heard great things about the Akebonos in regards to feel and the cold squeak, just had no idea about other circumstances with the factory set.

Otherwise, if anyone else has any other ideas to look into, or experiences, I guess the more I know the better. These currently sound as if I had some serious “race” brakes, yet embarrassing at the same time.

Take the pads off and re-lube the back and ears. lack of lube or debris could be causing the issue.

I Second the lubricant. I just had about the same experience with my pads. The shims were very loose and the lubricant had dried out.
I bent the shim tabs in with pliers and greased the pad back and shim inside. Then made sure the shims snapped in tight. Then more lube on the shim back.
I used the high end permatex red, but I think their green is fine here too.
After all that my brakes have been silent for a week now.

So yeah the squeaking comes and goes, so I’ll have to find some time to take the fronts apart.

Anything specific necessary to get the job done and/or anything that’s different than a regular brake job? I do have an OBD11 but I know that’s only necessary for the rears.

Strange that it does this when warm. I side with those above who had noisy brakes on cold OEM pads. For what it's worth I had no issues since going with Akebono Pads + Zimmerman Rotors.

    Brake squeak at low speeds...

I thought it strange too on mine. It definitely did it when warmed up, and *not* when cold. And not a fluke, I put up with it for months

My situation came about because I have “summer” and “winter” pad sets. So I’ve used the summer set last year and the time between dried out all the lubricant between the pads and shims. Couple with the shims being loose.

They’re still perfectly quiet in every situation now after 3 weeks since I redid them.

I’m not saying it couldn’t be the pads, but redoing the lubricant is cheaper than replacing a set of pads.

Common with the stock pads. It gets worse in colder weather and pretty much gone in the summer months for me. Finally swapping out to akebonos and Zimmerman rotors later this week.

Yeah had that happen last winter but mine were doing it in high heat too... especially after a long downhill drive with moderate brake use. It seems like the extra heated pads/rotors cause it as well. Now the squeak is gone but I’m sure it’ll come back with the right conditions. I’ll have to get under there and clean everything up eventually. Otherwise, I’ll end up switching to Akebonos, like most recommend.

Yes, it’s a common problem of the factory brake pads. It squeals a soon the weather get cold. The squealing happened just after 25k, had it clean lube at the dealer twice, but it just coming back after a week or two. Changed the damn pads and never look back.
