    Air Suspension Fault - c1048, c1031

    Greetings all, well I knew this day would come when I'd have something to troubleshoot on my '16 s6. I was cruising home from shopping when I got an air system fault, headlight fault, and TPMS fault. The TPMS fault is taken care of and I understand that the headlight fault is due to the air system fault. I'm thinking that the problem is in the rear given one of the faults talking about the rear. I just need some direction on where to start troubleshooting!

    Edit: I did lower the car 10 mm with VCDS. No issues for around 4 months.

    Okay, so I saved off my full scan and cleared logs. I will see if this come back. If it does I will attempt to capture output of each sensor. In the meantime I drove the car around, switched between drive modes; the car seemed to raise and lower just fine.

    To log each sensor, I go into Leveling control and what values do I want to log? Also should I just log the values and just switch drive modes or actually manually disconnect the leveling links and move the sensor arms?

    Yep your code does show it is "intermittent" but it might come back. In which case I lean more towards faulty sensor rather than just broken linkage arm.
    Kind of sucks cause they are not cheap.
    It's up to you how you want to test it. I don't know the values off the top of the head but they are all listed in VCDS in plain searchable text so you should have no trouble finding them.

    To update this potential issue, I pulled the spare tire out and gained access to the battery and did a battery test on the vehicle. I used a TopDon-100 off Amazon. It checked out at 88% as was fine. I didn't know where the air distribution block was, but there it was right in the foam spare tire hardware kit holder. I went ahead and hit it with soapy water and didn't see any obvious leaks. I think I can rule out that area of the car.

    Question - should the car always be leveling when I open the door? I do notice that all 4 corners will drop down (Not slammed but maybe a half inch) even when I leave the car in Comfort mode overnight. When I open the door and BEFORE I start the engine it wont level up until after I start the car. Is this normal? I find it hard to believe that all 4 air struts are leaking at the same time.

    I did find some sensors to log in the leveling system module but wasn't sure they are the right ones. I'll post more info once I hook up VCDS again.

    when i exit my car i can sometimes hear the suspension leveling, regardless of mode. other times i hear no self leveling. i think it depends how much stuff i have in the trunk or how many passengers exit the car....its all weight related.
    the car will not increase ride height when off. this is due to the compressors inability to run when the car is off.

    the code that would concern me is:

    If the suspension was leaking air the symptoms and fault codes should be different.
    Opening the rear doors or trunk tend to initiate some rear axle leveling procedures. I believe it is an attempt to compensate for a possible load change, or ease trunk loading access. Also if you usually drive around solo and then put some people in the back you can also see the message on the DIS that the car is self leveling once the car is running.
    Also (at least with my car) when the car is "sleeping" I have been in the garage working on other things and heard it re-adjust(vent) from time to time. I believe it is possibly temperature compensation but I do not know for sure.

    Update and more info - I jacked up the front left of my s6 (I suspect this is the problematic area) unhooked the leveling sensor linkage to the control alarm and logged it. The sensor name was called Absolute Ride height or something like that. As I would move the arm back and forth the numbers in mm would go higher and lower but then change to something that didn't make sense. For example one side of the sensor would be 500mm and as I move it the other way it would go to 300 something mm which makes sense, but then back to a higher number. The range wasn't consistent.

    To further confirm its probably this sensor I cleared codes and did this again and the C1048 (mechanical failure came back) I'm hoping that moving the sensor arm back and forth in the full range it can go doesn't trigger a failure. Also what does c1048 mean? C for connector? Should be able to take this data and cross reference with the service manual i'd think. Searching my service manual finds nothing.


    I think I need a new sensor. Question are there any aftermarket ones that are worth a damn? This sensor is 300 bucks new. Looking for direction on the replacement part.

    C is just generic OBD designator for "chassis"

    B - Body
    C - Chassis
    P - Powertrain
    U - User

    Most codes in the service manual revolve around P codes.

    I think you found your culprit is the sensor though and now you just need to find a good price.
    The sensor p/n should be 4H0941285G Front Left dealer online = $334
    Ebay's got one for $37 it might be worth taking a flyer on even if it does not work...

    I bought the 37 dollar sensor. Its worth a try. I've found the genuine one for 280 ish. The concept of this part is simple in theory... voltage is supplied, and signal voltage is modulated. I'll update this thread when I get the Chinese part in there.

    S6 should be the 2MB suspension.
    384 mm Front
    382 mm Rear
    (Confirmed by the repair manual as +-10mm too)
    I don't believe that changed for the C7.5
    I think it is really meant for when installing new suspension components. i.e you set the axle to those levels prior to tightening up all the bolts.
    If I were going to attempt it I'd make sure to save and write down everything.
    When I followed the similar procedure for lowering, the stored values were all over the place since presumably it was done correctly by the factory. Others also confirmed their starting values did no necessarily match others nor the service manual.
    These were my baseline heights...

    LF 400.7
    LR 395.1
    RF 390.7
    RR 378.3

    IMO if you got to the "start to reference level" then measure them all as equal then I might consider stopping since it sounds like nothing is wrong. If the one you replaced was wildly off then maybe proceed.
