Question Best Extended Warranty for 2018 TT-RS

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
I had National Warranty for my 2003 RS6 and it paid for itself a couple of times over.

So looking for an Extended Warranty for my 2018 TT-RS. Any recommendations?

I got a 10yr/100k mile through fidelity services. Got it through my Audi dealership. No deductible if repairs done at the dealership. I also bought the wheel and tire warranty. Already replaced 6 tires, and one wheel, my car is 2 1/2 years old and sitting on new rubber. Tire warranty has already paid for itself several times over. Have little doubt the mechanical warranty will more than pay for itself as well.

Yes on aftermarket warranty. I can only speak to my experience with a tuned 2010 TTS/ with aftermarket goodies and a similar warranty through the same dealer was I only paid the $100 deductible on a claim and no questions asked.

Aftermarket warranties are always a rip-off. Remember, they are essentially highly-overpriced insurance, and the interest on the money you deposit accrues to the warranty issuer, not to you. The purpose of them is to earn money for the issuer, not to protect you.

You would be better off taking the money that you would spend on an extended warranty, and investing it in a low-fee index fund from a reputable firm like Vanguard or Fidelity. Contribute a bit to that fund every month (doesn't have to be a lot). Then you can still access the money to pay for repairs if needed, and if it isn't needed for repairs, you get the profit at the end, instead of the warranty company getting the profit.

^^ what Spidey says. Warranty companies charge whatever math they do that makes them money. You are paying for something against your odds. The money amassed through any manage-free investment would yield much more.

Yeah, except no. Love to see your investment planning lol Where can I turn $20 a month into limitless cash in 2 years?

I paid $1300 for an extended on the Touareg........when the navigation unit crapped out to the tune of a $3300 repair bill I only paid $100.

The "invest the money yourself" idea works only if you only ever have one failure and it's minor. And of course, no way to plan for that and by the time you're $6000 into repairs it's too late to do the cost benefit analysis and decide it's worth it.

These aren't 2010 Corrolla's we're talking about, the number and expense of things that can and do go wrong is high.

You are right though, it is like insurance which no one ever argues is a bad idea oddly enough. And I've paid a LOT more for insurance without (thankfully) ever having to use it than I ever have for an extended warranty.

The expected gain calculation for extended warranties almost always comes out in the negative. That's largely because when you read the fine print, you realize that most of the "big ticket" items that likely to be an issue are not covered, or covered only in part. There are also plenty of get out of paying clauses that say things like "if there is evidence of track use" or "if there is evidence of rough driving" or "if there is evidence of poor maintenance" that allow the warranty company to get out of paying. In the end, the likelihood of coming out ahead is less than 50%.

Note this is different from investing in Audi Care on a new vehicle, which is just pre-paying for the scheduled maintenance. I've done the math on that, and it comes out a little bit ahead for the consumer assuming that you are absolutely religious (as I am) about doing all scheduled maintenance on-time. But that math breaks down immediately if you miss even a single maintenance interval.

I wasn’t alluding to investing 20 bucks to get rich. I am a 38 year old professor, settled with my wife. The investing I’m talking about is adding more percentage to your Roth accounts, buying a single share of SPY or QQQ a month and holding for the long term... or simply putting the lump sum of the extended warranty into the money market (which takes all but a few seconds to do...) Investment doesn’t mean day trading penny stocks or dumping all your money into Tesla on hype. The SnP 500 grows on average 8% a year and you can take any point in the history of the US and there is not a single moment where you don’t come out ahead after 5 years. 8% compounded annually is doubling your money in ~9 years. $3000 for an extended warranty in SnP 500 making 8% would be $4400 in 5 years and $6500 in 10 years. The risk to reward ratio in extended warranties favor the warranty company 85% to your 15%. The aforementioned figures are all but conservative averages and the average in the past decade has been well north of 12% (5.3k and 9.7k respectively with 3k). The argument that something breaks large enough to justify the upfront cost never makes sense in a statistical analysis - way outside of any confidence interval figure). Anecdotes are the only rebuttals... There’s a reason why the finance guy will sit with you to talk about all of the potential costs in order to sell you the warranty.

I live in a development that is approximately four years old and still being built out. Some people have had nails in tires two or three times already. I had one for a '19 C7 Grand Sport, and my wife has had two or three. The last time it happened we had to get a new tire. I contacted the one builder still working here and showed them photos my wife took of the street in front of the house my wife drove by, and noticed she ran over something. There were several nails, screws, and metal clips. The builder actually reimbursed us for the tire, but didn't admit any fault. I just told them, yeah, it could have happened anywhere, but there was a high number of incidents right here in the development. And they should be policing up the area at the end of the day. How long could it take one or two people with shop brooms to sweep? Anyway, sorry to hear about your bad luck with tires.
