    Rusted Flex Pipes

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
Bought my car with 3" ASP catless down pipes and exhaust. The flex pipes were rusted and I had them replaced what will be 6 years ago come December. They are rusted to shit again and am wondering how normal this is and if anything can be done from preventing them from rusting through or just deal with it every 5 or so years? I understand the flex braiding is not full stainless but just looking to get some ideas/insight.

    Thanks!
    Darren

Wrapping it can buy you extra time from rusting, or high heat enamel paint. Won't prevent rusting, but sure will take a long time.

"POR 15" makes really good rust prevention and rust neutralizing products.

I wouldn’t wrap them on a street car. It will retain moisture and make them rust quicker. Pulled wrap off a set before and underneath had rusted to the point where the downpipes broke into pieces.

Would never use a wrap on a street car as mentioned sbove.....
Not to sound like a smart-ass but have you tried a quality coupling

You must have a guilty conscious if you think that is being a smart ass

Excuse my ignorance but I was under the assumption that the whole section gets changed, not just the braided sleeving around it? I'm not sure what exactly was used last time but I spoke to ASP and they were willing to repair it, they still have the jigs for them but I didn't want to drive all the way down to south jersey for that so just had a local shop do it. The pic you posted of the Vibrant is stainless? Sorry, its a bit blurry and can't make out all the text when I zoom in.

POR 15 could be a good idea. I'm sure I'm not the only one to go through this or is it just most people garage and don't dd their cars? My car see snow and north east winters so if it is just something that needs to be done every so often, so be it.

Yes- the Vibrant unit is all stainless steel- 304 for the inner pipe(bellows) and braid, 409 for the welding rings(similar to the material of the OE exhaust)

Thank you for this. Spoke to the shop that replaced it last time and they said they only use Vibrant so is it odd that they rusted out in 5 years?
