    Active Lane assist button

Just picked up an 2018 S5 SB! Enjoyed my time with the A7 but wanted to get back to something a little more sporty.

    Question for the forum.

Having some issues with the Lane-Assist where after I click on the button it would activate and center/steer the car but then after 20-30 seconds it beeps and tells me I need to take the steering wheel. I tested this during day on highway and it still does this. I am planning to take it to the dealer but I noticed something a little odd. The activate active assist button on the stalk of mine has an ICON with a car and 2 arrows pointing towards it like the one below. Almost all of the other ones I have seen has an icon that just looks like a one-lane road with vertical lines. Did Audi do this intentionally? Or is this non-OEM? Thanks.

It's lane keep assist. It's not designed for hands off use. It's designed to help keep you centered in your lane while you're steering.

Thank you. I done some additional research and all the info also confirms what you are stating. I had my hands on the wheel but the road was straight so I was not steering.. It still gave me a loud DONG and told me to take control. I will do some more testing. Any answers to why there are two different symbols for it?

You may need to move your hand position or put more pressure on the wheel. TBH it's not a great system--I turned mine off after a few days and never looked back.

Gotta give the wheel a little jiggle to let the car know you're still there. Wish it didn't alert so soon.

Same here, turned it off. I feel it's my responsibility to keep my vehicle between the lines, it's not too difficult, it's called driving.

Same. It’s useless tech at this point.

Side note: I don’t know how long it would take for me to even be able to rely on Tesla’s autopilot. I could not drive on the freeway doing 80 and not steer my car.

At least not in a very relaxed state of mind, at least.

I find Autopilot more stressful than just driving. When I'm driving my brain is used to focusing and paying attention to everything going on around me. With Autopilot I kept having to remind myself to pay attention and jump in if I had to second-guess the computer. Adaptive cruise is a godsend for long roadtrips, though.

I turn ALA/LKA off for sport driving, on for cruising when the mind might wander and I might get distracted.

symbol on the stalk? it's the same symbol on my '18 - I don't think there are differing symbols for the stalk for this platform - maybe a blank one for cars that don't have the LKAS

I thought it was kind of weird too but almost all of them has a symbol like the below.

Agreed. It is terrible for daily driving. The only time I turn it on is on long road trips. For the most part I am actively driving, but it is nice to know I have a little bit of tech keeping an eye on everything.
