    Accidentally filled up with E85

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
Hey guys, today I was planning to fill 3 gallons of E85 and the rest 91 octane like I normally do. I was talking to a friend and totally forgot, so I ended filling 13 gallons of E85 until the tank is full. Should I be concerned with any potential damages? or Can I just drive it normally until the E85 works it's way out? I plan to fill up with 91 gas on a daily basis to dilute the mixture slowly. Any other advice?

yea you'll be fine. you can get on it a lil to feel it lol but dont get crazy and you'll lean out pretty hard without a hpfp upgrade.
every qtr tank just top off with 91.
spend the money and get yourself at least an ethanol sensor so you can better control your fuel readings.

im apr stg1/hpfp/stock pulley and i run the 100oct file with e40 as a daily

You’ll be fine, just don’t go too far into boost to prevent leaning out and causing any harm. The engine has safety parameters to where it may throw you in limp mode to prevent and damage. Just restart the car and you’ll be fine. Just keep topping off with 91 until you can balance it out more.

Thanks for the positive note, guys. My CEL did come on but the car is running fine on the way home. I commute 50 miles round trip for work, so I'll top it off with 91 each day.

You prob got a CE light for fuel trims, as full E-85 will prob push the trims to the limit. How many gal did you put in? I'd prob top off with 91 asap.

I had did the same thing earlier this summer and got into it by about 4K rpms and got a CEL for too lean of conditions. I drove like a grandma until I topped it off with more 91 but weird thing is after that incident my back fuel level sensor got messed up and never read right afterwards.

I heard you can't siphon gas out the old way anymore. The only way is to drop the tank? Well, I'm going to take the chance and drive it out. I was able to refill with 3 gallons of 91 today. I'll report if I encounter any issue or damage. Wish me luck!

Is your fuel gauge reading way off and how do you know it's messed up?

If you have an IE tune, I think they have a way to drain fuel.

Well because my gauge doesn’t read right and I have a CEL for the rear fuel level sensor. Seems coincidental that it popped up right as I filled up with 91 from a nearly fully e85 tank.

yup those are the codes for running too much ethanol. just keep dilluting it until you are putting in 3/4 tank of 91 then top off with e85. that should put you around e15-e20

I did that once also, just didn't it push it hard and keep diluting it when it got a few gallons down. No issues.

You could drain a bunch out by using VCDS to run the LPFP under Engine control module, output tests. Disconnect the line that goes over the air intake, put some tygon tubing on the hard line into a suitable container, and run the pump to drain as much out as you want.

Thanks for sharing this method. I will keep in mind for future needs. For now, I have replaced about half a tank with 91 so I think I will be fine as most of you said. The car runs great with no adverse effects. One observation I noticed is that E85 runs really clean. My stainless steel exhaust doesn't turn black even after a few days.

Good to hear no issues, and yes, saving the polar bears one tank of ethanol at a time.

Why aren’t you using the e40 file instead of 100octane file if you have e40 in your rank ?
