New ('21) S cars dont have flat bottom steering wheels.....?

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
Just went through the 2021 S4, S5, S5 Sportback, SQ5 (from the 21 order form), and S6....... not a flat bottom steering wheel to be found.

It may just be me, but isn't that what kind of makes the S cars feel like more than just A/Q cars when you get behind the (pun intended) wheel?

Disappointed to see this. I hope the RS line retains it for 21....

They probably all had the heated steering wheel option (not available with flat bottom)?

So the base model of all 3 does not have heated steering wheel. They have the round centers, everything above premium has heated from factory, not as an option and has the trapezoidal center. Neither have flat bottom.

From the list of standard features, you can no longer get anything other than the heated wheel. Maybe it’s a mistake or maybe you just automatically get a heated wheel.

I read that it has to do with a new design for the ACC to sense your hands on the wheel.

    Is that a 2020 or a 2021?

    That is from a 2020 S4, I know I know... but the 2021s haven't landed yet here.

FWIW, this may be true. I have the 2021 SQ5 ordering guide and the flat bottom wheel is not available with driver assistance features. Shame.

I suspect it will be available on later build models while still being MY2021.

Yeah, I’m holding out hope for a mid year change to this. I’ll be in the market in March, was looking at SQ5 or another S4. Would be a shame if the flat bottoms disappeared forever.

Heated steering wheel is now a part of the convenience package which is standard on the premium plus models. I think that is what is deleting the flat bottom steering.

That’s too bad. I love my flat bottom and,
although a nice feature, would rather the flat wheel than heat.

Funny, my son’s Camaro SS as a flat steering wheel, heated wheel, heated seats, and ventilated seats. Can you have both heated and ventilated in the Audi?

in german boards I read that new MY 2021 don´t have flat bottom wheel because the wheels are capacity for the lane assist.
Idk it is right or not, bit the same wheels are in other models too.

I wonder if they will update it to include the driver assist sensors, assuming its a sensor in the wheel and not some camera on the dash looking at it. That could be a good solve.

nope, nobody does. I've been on this for over a year, it's a mutually exclusive option.

As I wrote, if u have lane assist it would not work more with another wheel. Steering wheel hat capativity touch sensors and u don´t need to turn it back and forth to signalise you still hold it like in MJ2020 and earlier.
And there is at the moment just one design of this wheel --> and it is the reason why there are no wheels with flat bottom.

OK so there is the possibility they will correct this and update with the FBSW mid year or later.

There is some disagreement on the capacitive touch sensing among techs and parts department managers I know. Even they are having a hard time getting information from AoA which cars have it, which use it, etc.

Recently discussed this with a highly skilled tech looking to help a customer have a heated wheel in an e-tron but was told it couldn't be done because heated wheels can't have the capacitive touch due to the heating.

Bumping this in hopes of keeping it alive. I’m beyond disappointed that the ‘21 S4’s are not coming with flat bottoms. @Johann@Carbnlab please with your infinite wisdom come up with a solution for this and I’ll be first in line. The sensors for Active Cruise will be the big hitch.

This is killing me - I want an exclusive color (2021) but that means no flat bottom steering wheel and sounds like no retrofit. A person could do the 'launch edition', in just whatever color they get, which does have flat bottom and the older hands-on tech though... but then not the color I would want :(

I’m in communication with Alex from Europrice regarding this very dilemma. He is fairly certain there are Euro edition cars that have flat bottom wheels with the capacitive sensing feature. He will get back to me when he has more info and I will generate a new thread upon confirmation. Fingers crossed because I can’t stand the look of the ‘21 round wheels.

I also just got done having a thread with Alex. Seems like we are all on the same page of not knowing how things will respond if just shoving a flat bottom wheel on the new models with round wheels since it’s old version of hands-on be new.
May reach out to AoA today to see what they say.

This would potentially be helpful. Alex thought if you installed a non capacitive wheel in the 21’s, it would most likely cause the ACC to freak out and simply not operate.

Short of the RS6/7 flat-bottom steering wheels there is nothing else I see as touch sensitive yet. Was hoping Audi would follow suit with these other models, but so far nothing I see.

Unfortunately I see no movement on making flat-bottom wheels with the touch sensitive system for these smaller chassis. There are revised part numbers for later cars but they are unheated wheels without a touch sensitive system still. Same with Q7/8 models even the RSQ8.

Honestly I don't have the need for the heated wheel. I just love the feel of the s5 sb with the square wheel. Maybe will look into aftermarket steering wheels if I go into a 21/22 s5. Thank you for your response!.

The heating is tied with the touch sensitive system. The touch sensitive system is required for the driver's assistance systems. This is why the facelift B9.5 cars with driver's assistance systems that have round heated wheels and trapezoidal airbags cannot sadly fit a flat-bottom wheel since those are not touch sensitive.

The flat-bottom wheels for these models sadly are not touch sensitive. This means you cannot fit them on cars that have these round heated touch sensitive wheels.

New ('21) S cars dont have flat bottom steering wheels.....?

It is a really nice wheel though. I thought I would hate it coming from a flat bottom wheel but 90% of the time I don’t notice.

Butttttttt, can you put an RS6 wheel in the B9.5? Or does the RS button complicate things?

Have yet to give this a shot, but some customers sitting on fence about it. The controls can be changed out for ones that work with the touch sensitive and heating but do not have the RS Mode button which won't work in anything but an RS model.

The airbag would obviously need to be changed out along with the controls. Unfortunately this drives costs $2500+, just depends how badly you want a flat-bottom wheel...
