Gearing up to do my first oil change on the car. Thoughts on Oil? 0w40 vs. 5w40?

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
    Guys,

About to do the first oil change. Have all the gear coming. I have a nice jack (low profile one) from my teenage/20s, has a pad on it to not damage the jack points. Also bought some pads for the cheap auto store jack stands I have.

Have the 6mm allen key socket for drain plug and the 36mm socket for the oil filter.

But anyway--the subject of this thread is oil. What are your thoughts on 0w40 vs. 5w40? Mobil 1 is my preferred oil for my cars.

The past owner from their records had the shop go with 5w40. Northern Virginia can get cold and have drastic differences in temps especially in winters.

My brain is telling me just to be safe and stay with 5w40.

Is there any advantages to 0w40? Performance? Thinner oil? Car has 97K on clock too.

And my second question--jack points. Is there anywhere in the front I can jack up the car to then slide jack stands under the left and right side to save time? In the old days my race car civic had a tow hook I used as a jack point and made life a LOT easier.

I use Liqui Moly 5w40 from FCP Euro online. The local Napa stores around NoVA carry 1L bottles if you ever need to top off.

For oil changes, I use ramps. $30 Rhino ramps from any parts store.

For jack points, I have a block that fits over the pinch weld. There is a marked front and rear pinch weld jack spot. I wouldn't jack there without the proper block.

I've done a lot of searching all day today and can't find anything to show that Mobil 1 is 'bad' per say, for our motors.

Heck, if Audi says it's cool, I think so too.

    https://www.audiusa.com/content/dam/...e-Bulletin.pdf

I've only had great results with Mobil 1 in all my vehicles over the years.

Think I'll give it a try this time around. ALso, I don't have any oil consumption issues.

Any suggestions on the crush washer? Where can I pick those up locally? Outside of the stealership of course...

I’ve been using Castrol 0w40 for over 2 years on my S4, with what I feel is great performance. Here in Canada our Castrol 0w40 is made in Germany (not sure if the same applies to Castrol Edge 0w40 sold in the US - check the back of the bottle for details)

I’ve been using 0w-40 for my car and also on my wife’s Q5. I use Mobile 1 or Castrol since they’re always available at my local Walmart. Some may not prefer to do the oil change this way but I use a fluid extractor. My oil gets changed between every 4500-5k.

Honestly been thinking about getting one of those!

How often do we need to change the oil filter?

Been using Mobil1 euro blend since day 1. Barely burns any, and I change at abiut 7500miles every time. Oil is just fine, and I'd recommend it. Also, buy an extractor and save a ton of time and ease

LiquiMoly every 5k. I tried Mobil 1 and it burns faster IMO. I’ve noticed lower temps with LiquiMoly. Old girl loves it and never going back

My 2015 S4 seemed to consume more oil when using Mobil 1 0W-40 than it does now using Castrol Edge 5W-40. Your mileage may vary, and I probably just jinxed myself.

Second that Mobil 1 burns less. When I got my CPO it came with 7 oil changes. Did the Audi 10k changes and every 5k I needed to add a qt. Did my first change with Mobil 1 and at 4K the MMI had not moved. Bought a dip stick to make sure and it is still full.

I’m changing it at 7k. I also bought a schwaben oil extractor. It works great. No fuss no mess. No getting under the car

I use Liquid-Moly and have a MityVac 7200 to do topside changes. However I did one recently via underside drain method, just to see if there was any difference in how much oil you get out, and the difference was negligible, so going to go back to extractor exclusively. Very convenient, and it eliminates possibility of stripping drain plug or crush washer not sealing.
Also, I buy the oil and filter from FCP, so after sending oil back, it only costs me a net $ 20 for shipping.

Anyone go more than 1 year between oil changes? I only put 4.5k miles on my car per year and I usually do it at about 13ish months. Can I go longer or is it not worth it?

LiquiMoly kit from ecs tuning is a hell of a deal comes with everything you need for an oil change. I’d recommend buying an additional liter to top off between changes.

There is no "wrong" oil if it is full synthetic and either 5w40 or 0w40 with VW502/505 certification or equuvalent.

A good choice is Mobil 1 FS (formerly labeled European Car formula).

I just bought an extractor last week because the guy buying my A6 asked me to do an oil change prior to purchase. I'd been looking at them for a while and was short on time, so picked it up and gave it a go. WOW, talk about the easiest oil change of life. That said, I was a little worried I put too much oil in (Liqui Moly, same I'll be putting in the S4), so put the extractor back down and sucked some out till the MMI dropped slightly. I'll be ordering a dipstick for the S4 since I plan on keeping it a while.

Side note to those using an extractor, how do you dispose of your oil? We can drop it off at fire stations or oil change places, but I thought they want it in a container. I would rather not pour from the extractor into the 5L empty oil jog, as that'll just make a mess I'm sure.

I just reverse the flow from the extractor and pump it back into the new containers that I just used for the oil change. There's a clear strip on the side of the 5L jug so you can tell how much is in it when refilling. And as long as you watch what you are doing, and shut the siphon off in time, it's pretty clean and painless.

I used Rotella T6 in both my Subaru turbo EJ's, one a higher mileage (220k km) Spec B that didn't burn a drop of oil between 5-6k km intervals. Didn't know people ran this in S4's, but maybe I'll change from Liqui Moly to T6. Less than half the price I'm sure lol.

I assumed this, but didn't see a reverse action on my retractor. I'll have to look into it, thanks.

I don't know about north of the border but down here just about any shop will let you dump it into their waste oil drum.

^ This. Some reverse, some don't. Mine does. People can also buy a cheap fluid siphon from Harbor Freight or any auto parts store.

Or, simply buy a large funnel to use and pour it back into the original jug or bottles straight from the extractor tank.

I'm glad to hear that he (coop3422) is going to get a true dipstick. MMI is notoriously inaccurate.

When I got my A6 last year, (couldn't find a 6MT S4 or Golf R) I was surprised and annoyed it had no dipstick. I've had an s2k and some high mileage turbo EJ's, so I'm used to checking the oil level every fill up lol. I didn't bother buying one for the A6 because I didn't know how long I'd keep it. Now that I've found the S4 with every option I'd pick new, it's time to start buying parts, and a dipstick is too obvious lol.
