Help with coolant expansion tank hoses

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
I'm in the process of changing my spark plugs and completed the right side with no issue. On the driver's side I went to disconnect the coolant expansion tank lines and I think I broke both of them. I released the metal spring clip and pulled straight out on both lines but it appears the black center part broke off in the neck of the tank. Parts #10 and #11 below.

    1. Am I supposed to gently twist it to remove them properly or pull straight out?

    2. I notice in ETKA that there are two part numbers for each depending on the build date of the car. The parts look identical but there's a price difference. Does anyone know if the newer and less expensive parts (4G0121081CQ and 4G0121081CS) will work on my 2012-build S6?

    Thanks.

These should pull straight out but similar to a rubber hose it’s probably advisable to twist it to break it free and then pull.

I hate the inconsistencies with part numbers. I’d get your vin and call the dealer and verify.

    They don’t twist.

    They have a flat spot.

    Gently wiggle out and away.

Thanks, now that I got the replacement hoses in, it's much more obvious how it works. I ordered the ones that correspond to my 2012 build date (4G0121081 BH and BT). Here's what it looked like when I broke it:

I used a little hook tool to grab the broken piece from the rear to get it out of the tank fitting. It took quite a bit of force and I didn't want to gouge the plastic. Once it initially broke free it came out easily.

And here the new part. There indeed is a flat spot to key it, and I guess it's done to keep the semi-rigid lines in place to look pretty. Notice the flat spot in relation to the clip. While removing the other end (which was very tight), I found it's best to wiggle it up and down along the same plane as the flat side. I feel it would be easier to break if you wiggle in the other direction.

I did finish the plug replacement and it's an absolute pain. There are other threads that detail the procedure so I won't go into here. Plan on spending about 3 hours total to do all 8 plugs. Tools: T25 for the coolant screw, T30 for everything else, 10mm sockets for a couple of nuts, and 5/8" spark plug socket.

Lots of clips to get to the plugs :-) I had the same issue on the reservoir hoses and on the radiator. Much easier after I saw the new parts ;-)

Hmmm … should all quick disconnects be regularly demated and remated to help long term care …?

I had to buy the ignition coil removal tool for my (2015, 55 Kmiles) S4 … it was still very … very difficult to remove the coil packs … It always felt like they would break off … I chipped a couple fins .. but, no foul …

Does the S6 have the same coil packs …? The Dealer replaced my spark plugs for the 30 Kmile service … it cured the slight idle miss …

    Any thoughts …??
