    Tunes - How custom?

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
So I have searched and looked over the various tune threads (i could have missed one) but I dont feel at this point I know the answer:

Who does the most "custom" tunes for our cars? The only dyno tune option I know near me is CB Tuning and thats hours away. I didn't know if Uni or APR do exclusively off the shelf stages. Reason I ask is I finally got my avant back on the road: Autotech HPFP, S3 injectors, Treadstone FMIC, ARP top end hardware, R8 coils, one step colder plugs, catch can, cold air intake, rebuilt head, DV+, factory KO3 rebuilt (by Tim's Turbos w/ 360 and clipped wheel), 3in HFC and downpipe.

I dont neatly fall into any "stage" but I assume I would be a stage 2+ if no custom option exists. Rebuilding the bottom end would be next and then probably K04, but I am not quite there yet.

    Thanks.

For a stage 2 car, custom would be a waste of time. Your turbo is your biggest limitation. I feel that any extra power custom tuning would bring wouldn’t be worth the effort because anything extra custom tuning would give would be way outside of the K03’s efficiency range. You’d basically just creating a bunch of hot, less efficient air.

Who’s tune are you running now? You have a HPFP upgrade and S3 injectors so you must have something now right?

+1 on United Motorsports. The standard off the shelf 2+ tune won’t account for the S3 injectors. UM can help you with that. I don’t have their tune, but I have heard nothing but positive things.

To my knowledge its still stock. I have not had the ECM out but I have no reason to believe its anything else. I have only put 100 miles on the car since rebuild. The only thing I seem to notice is that my boost gauge says 13 when I thought they ran at 10.

I think member Perry01 might have the answer for you. His K04 2.0T is custom tuned by Integrated Engineering and he's getting almost 350 awhp on the dyno and dipping into the 12's in the quarter in a Q5 SUV.

I second the idea that a custom tune really isnt necessary, and despite it being "custom" you might not have better results compared to an OTS flash.

Do you have any airflow specs or compressor maps for the turbo?

If you really feel the need for a one off tune, Eurodyne Maestro is a good option. That said, the tune will only be as good as the person behind the keyboard.

    Not unreasonable statements.
I do not have any numbers presently, but only because I am not great with my Ross Tech yet. I finally paid for more VIN last week so I have only played with my halogen to xenon so far. Should you tell me where to look I will share said numbers.

IE doesn't have a k04 tune for the b7s though. B8s yes, but not B7s.

I'd also throw my vote in for United Motorsports. Might want to give them a call and see if they can do something semi-custom for your turbo setup.

Apparently several of the major tuners will do custom tunes. Not sure how you qualify or what the stipulations are, but APR even does custom tunes. As with any custom tune, expect a significant amount of data logging and back and forth. But seriously I would give United Motorsports a call and just ask them what they think is the best route. They will likely be able to give better advice than any of us on here.

APR will never do a custom tune on a B7. Maybe on brand new platforms (since that’s where the money is and it helps pay for their R&D) but if you called APR about a custom tune for a hybrid k03 turbo they’d laugh then hang up.

They did just do a custom tune on a B7. Granted it was an RS4 with some very custom turbo work. See EricZ build thread.

Somehow I neglected to put this in the initial post, but the car is an automatic and Fred at UM informed me they dont touch autos. So unfortunately UM is now out.

APR tuned that? Are you sure? I’ve been following the thread but don’t recall reading that.

I just don’t think you’re going to get anything but a no from them unless you happen to be a BorgWarner engineer doing some experimental e-turbo tuning. Not a stock-ish b7 2.0t with a clipped k03.

Though I’m sure if you write enough zeroes on a check they’d be happy to oblige. I just don’t see APR giving two shits to engage their tuners for a custom tune for a barely-above-stock 2.0t. Not like there is a market for that or any r&d value there.

have you thought about just going K04? you have all the supporting mods, maybe just a RS4 PRV. More doors might open up. I run the GiAC tune and enjoy it. But if i were to do it again or just for fun i would go with someone like UM. I heard whispers Malone tuning around here too. they have a 2.5 stg tune.

GIAC tunes are no joke. My K04 tune is probably one of the most aggressive off the shelf K04 tunes in the B7 section judging from my logs VS everyone else so far. People don’t talk about GIAC anymore with all of these other options but GIAC has been here the whole time making great tunes.

Find a WinOLS tuning wizard and you can go as custom as needed, I've already helped log and tune a k04/Frankenturbo 1.8T and 2.0T to some real nice power levels.

Agreed. I know we have both had great success with GIAC, and doesnt seem to get enough credit. have both of their tunes K03 & K04 on the B7, as well on my B5 S4 & B8.5 SQ. My Shop swears by them and have never looked at any other tuner.

Meaning they write tunes for lesser tuners? Yes if that’s what you mean by white label.
