Roof Rack Torque Wrench... code? how to tell?

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
My used 2017 SQ5 came with roof bars installed, but no wrench to remove.

My sales guy had a spare one to give me, but it didn't fit. Not surprising as I see there are about a dozen different wrenches all coded differently.

So, how do you determine your wrench code?

    Eh?

Do you mean specifically, like the actual number/letter combo of MY roof rack? I do not know this, or where to find it on my roof rack. That's why I'm asking the question, so I can obtain the correct key/wrench. Maybe the confusion was that I said "wrench code." But yeah, I guess I mean 'what is my "roof rack code"?'

Or do you mean generally, like what do I mean by "code"? If you look at this ECS page, they show Roof Rack Torque Wrenches, and they all have different codes. (I'm guessing you don't mean this, but for the benefit of all...)

I meant what I said: What’s your roof rack code...it’s on your roof rack, wrench and roof rack are a combination...

    Terzinator,

If your torque wrench is code KR, I'll buy it from you. I'm also located in the Twin Cities.

    Sent you a PM. Thanks!

I know they are a combination.

If you saw my previous post, I said that I don't know where to find it on my roof rack. This is the whole point of the thread.

Sorry, I don't have it. This was a couple of months ago, when I was at the dealer for something else. I saw the sales guy, and I asked him about the wrench. This was before I knew all the possible combinations. Anyway, he said he had one in his desk, and I could have it if it worked. Tried it in the parking lot, and no-go. So I gave it back.

From the looks of the chart above, comparing it to the bolt pattern on the rack, I believe I need the KX wrench.

Sorry, but it just seemed so weird as I thought my request was fairly straightforward, that I didn't know where to find the code on the rack. Thought the replies were just being obtuse.

People are trying to help you with your question but you don’t really seem to be very grateful.

Just take a look at your last response!

haha, while I was posting that, it looked like you had posted a picture of the underside of your rack, with a sticker, which appeared helpful... So I removed my post within seconds, but you quoted it before I was able to edit it...

But then you removed your photo.

This is the craziest thread ever!

    Here's the exchange that's causing confusion/frustration.

In the order in which they were posted.

I picked up a Q5 rack for free.99, because it didn't have a wrench. I'm gonna rig it to my Sportwagen TDI after drilling through the aluminum. There's a sticker on the underside that has info, but nowhere on that sticker can I find a letter combination that matches one of the 12 patterns. When looking at the bolt pattern, it appears to match KR, but it has 9 triangles between its furthest squares instead of 7. It might be ST, though. I'll go to an Audi dealership to match them up, or just cut them off and replace them with 6-1x55 10mm bolts (cheaper and sketchier)!

What I'm trying to say is that I've seen the sticker that shows the rack code on some picture floating around these forums/internet. The sticker might be in the owners manual, or maybe in the box that houses your car jack found in the trunk. That's where the wrench would normally be found. Thanks for the info at Richfield Audi. I live about 10 minutes from there, thankfully!

There is no marking or sticker on the rack that has the Key Code. The one-page paper instructions that come with the rack have the Key Code printed on it.
The keys themselves have no Key Code stamp or mark either.

I have a spare KX key/wrench, $20 shipped to anywhere in continental USA.

I couldn't find my rack wrench when I first got my SQ5, but I was able to remove them with a screwdriver and pliers without much struggle and no damage (if you just need to remove in a pinch).

When I was reinstalling them, I found the wrench jammed down under the seat.

Got the KX wrench from S4'ed and it fits the business.

this image from spijun was most helpful in determining wrench configuration:
