Should I Replace the Rear Shock Mounts When Replacing Rear Struts

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
My 2011 A4 has 103,000 miles on it and I am getting ready to have the struts/shocks replaced. I am replacing the front strut rubber mounts (when I get some Bilstein B4's installed - getting KYB mounts as the suspension is 100% stock) but was unsure about the rears. I wasn't finding much good information on them and if they usually tend to fail and as they are $100 for a set.... didn't want to replace them unless it is advisable.

The car is 100% stock and we have owned it since new. As it had the pistons, rings, timing chain, timing tensioner, turbo, rear main seal, and water pump replaced I plan on holding onto it for another 2 years so my son can have it as his first car. It looks basically brand new and isn't worth much so why not (other than it is no Toyota as far as reliability but he is aware of that).

    Thanks for any input!

I would while you’re in there. They are fairly cheap.

I just picked up the b12 kit and got new mounts for the front and rears as well as spring perch’s for the rear. Not sure on the b4 struts but you may want to pick up new bump stops and dust boots as well

Edit: check fcpeuro the rear mounts should be like 20-30$ each

The cast aluminum part on mine was quite corroded when I replaced them along with the shocks. The Febi/Bilstein version was under $15 ea.

I replaced both of mine because there were cracks from the bolt hole to the edge of the strut mount I knew would break apart if not when I changed the shocks, certainly after. Sure 'nuff, as I'm waiting for the new mounts I changed the shocks and within a day the upper shock mount on the left cracked and the bolt backed out. Sounded like a jack hammer going down a street with bumps. They are cheap and easily changed when taking the whole process into consideration.

The front ...well...if you haven't done a suspension before, like me, all I can say is you'd better have some time off, an even surface to work on, two floor jacks and ramps (buy them - it will help with the final torque specs), and a high tolerance for pain.

That nice cut on my forehead was from me falling into the brake rotor while loosening the sway bar link bolt at the strut tower threaded connection. When the bolt finally gave under pressure from a gear wrench, so did my balance, but the rotor was just fine. Arrrggghhh!
