WTB Car shipping - has anyone shipped a car cross country?

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
Not your typical WTB ad, but not sure where else to post this.

Have any of you shipped a car cross-country, and if so, what service did you use? Moving from CA to VA and need to ship my RS4. All these brokers seem so sketchy so was wondering if AZ has a favorite or go-to firm. Thanks!

Rent a uhaul truck and put car on a flatbed tow truck and insert into uhaul then drive uhaul yourself safest and cheapest.

I’ve shipped several cars. I’ve been lucky I guess and never had an issue. I used UShip. Other shipper was Montway.

If you go the Uhaul route, remember you need to flatbed it. Not that one wouldn’t. Just a friendly PSA.

I just had an A3 e-tron shipped from Utah to CT by Sherpa Auto Transport (They are a Broker). They ended up using Coast to Coast Auto shipping. I was very happy with the contact info and also how thorough they were with marking any scratches on the car at the time of pickup.

The price wasn't the lowest but again I felt good about using Sherpa and they have really good reviews.

Probably looking at $2-3k for enclosed shipping coast to coast. I have used Montway shipping an older high mileage car, it is hit or miss as they just send the contracts out to bid and you don't get a say in who ships it.

I used Plycar to ship a car from TX to NJ in a covered trailer. Great experience with no issues.

I've had horrible experiences with multiple moves... 8 military moves thus far and counting... I would do it myself if I were you (for peace of mind), or; I would go with one of the ones the above responses recommended (covered transport, etc). Absolutely avoid the lowest price quote, etc...

X10 all those above are great. Have used Sunday on 5 occasions. Intercity and Reliable are other great options.

    Whatever you do...enclosed!

I had an S4 shipped from CA to PA and it was an absolute mess when it showed up.

It made me not want to do it again. I flew to WI on a Friday to get my current S4 and drove it home in VA by Sunday dinner.

I've heard good things about Horseless Carriage.

I had a car shipped halfway across the country for $900 on a 3 car flatbed towed by a dually pickup. In my experience, transport brokers use any independent guy that is willing to take the job. My only advice is to tell the broker that if it is on an open bed double decker car hauler, it absolutely can’t be on the bottom deck. A friend had a rare mustang show up with brake fluid stains on his hood because of a leaky shitbox on the top deck. Claim was paid out but still...

I used Rena at Enterprise Auto Transport to ship from AZ to VA. About $1100 all-in for open transport. Car was fine even though it shipped in Feb. Cars only get really messy if they run into snow/salt, etc. Position on the truck matters too. Unfortunately, position is dependent on pick-up order.

I’ve looked at using Intercity (local to me) and Angels Moving Autos (broker) for a cross country trip and anywhere west coast to CT enclosed was ~$2500. Even asked about dropping it in Chicago for pick up and drive back and the quote wasn’t that much cheaper

Thomas C. Sunday is who I would recommend. Used them for my NSX CA to NJ. Enclosed trailer on top was $2,035. Took about 2 weeks. FLAWLESS service from start to finish. I just called Intercity for a quote for FL to NJ for my upcoming Q7 purchase, they wanted $1,695. Oooof.

I Had a car shipped cross country and it was a total mess. It was a lowered B7 S4 Avant and they did not have the right trailer for the clearance and ripped the front bumper off when they backed it off. make sure its put on one of the big trailer s and specify the lower compartment as the transition is not as steep.

Thanks for all the advice, folks. I'll start making inquiries with Thomas Sunday and Horseless Carriage. Might also look into driving but I'm at 178k miles and would NOT want to have a critical component break and be stuck in the middle of nowhere...

9 days is...a lot. Mine arrived in 2 flat from AZ to VA.

FYI I booked with Intercity - $2050 for Bay Area, CA to Charlottesville VA, enclosed. All the brokers and UShip and everything like that was landing around $1900 due to Tesla apparently bidding up costs for cars coming out of CA, so Intercity and an enclosed carrier was a no-brainer. Thanks for the help everyone!

I recently purchased a Florida owned B7 s4 - Sprint Blue - One owner (BABIED) - 41,000miles... BEAUTIFUL AND INTACT!
Shipped from FL to MA and the driver hit a bridge with my car. I'll post some pictures.
My suggestion is ask about insurance and try to see if there's a way to go about an agreement that if something happens you don't want to go through the topical process with an adjuster. I don't know if it's possible but look at what happened to me. An adjuster is not going to give me what the car is worth in the real world.

Shipping prices are extremely high right now , if you can even , find a vehicle transporter , I been waiting over 2 weeks to get a Audi Allroad I purchased shipped to me from Detroit Michigan to Iowa / Illinois border on I-80 , apporximately 500 miles , I put in top price of $450.00 , no takers yet , Being I-80 is a main east to west interstate it's usually easy to move vehicles on this lane , Dealer said most the transporters are working on moving vehicles in and out of Florida ,I may have to end up renting a car and go get the Allroad .

Hi there! I'm sorry you're feeling a bit hesitant about shipping your car cross-country. It's understandable to want to make sure that your vehicle will arrive safely and in one piece. I've personally used an auto transport company called Shipaa to move my car from California to Virginia. I found out about them while searching about the cost to ship a car. They worked with me to find the best route and got my car to me in a timely manner. They were also very friendly and accommodating. They would be an excellent option for you. I highly recommend them, and I'm sure you'll be in good hands. Good luck!

It's definitely not your typical "want to buy" scenario, but it's a real need when you're making a big move, like from CA to VA.
When I had to ship my car, I did a lot of research and came across A1 Auto Transport. They had some solid reviews and seemed pretty reputable, so I decided to give them a shot. And let me tell you, they didn't disappoint.
Their service was top-notch from start to finish. They handled everything smoothly, and my car arrived safe and sound on the other side of the country. So, if you're feeling wary about all those sketchy brokers, I'd say that a car shipping company is a safe bet.

I have shipped several cars. Most recently from Oregon to VA. Took a week. Car arrived without any issues. I did use Uship. Which is a site with vendors who will compete for your business. It’s a mix of brokers and direct shippers. I have used Montway several times. They are a broker and have no complaints. One suggestion to make would be to have an AirTag placed in the vehicle before it gets picked up. Just another mechanism to track the vehicle.

FWIW I wrote a comprehensive thread 6 years ago regarding shipping cars across the country, it received pretty good feedback from the community. Most everything in the post is still applicable today. Hopefully it's helpful to anyone who is thinking about shipping a car from out of state. Since I wrote this I've shipped a Q7 Prestige for my wife from Boston to Seattle, no issues. So 4 of my last 6 Audi's have been shipped to me from out of state. Happy to answer any questions ppl may have, send me a PM.

Bought a 2006 S4 via private sale and had to ship from CA to NH. I used InterCity Lines, they were a little expensive, but WELL worth the piece of mind. Same company Jay Leno uses for all his cars.

If you really, really care about what you are transporting, which for me was an Audi Exclusive S5, go enclosed.

^This. I've used Passport Transport and McCollister to ship my vehicles in an enclosed trailer from CT to WA state, and CO to WA state, respectively.

I recently (January 2024) used “Move Auto”. I did get quotes from Reliable and McCollisters but eventually went with MA since they were affiliated with the moving company I used (United). I really tried not using any sort of broker but I have to say they did an awesome job. Initial estimate was a 3 day pick up window then 2-6 days shipping the car from California to Texas in an enclosed trailer. Communication was excellent and zero payment until the job was complete to my satisfaction. Picked the car up with an enclosed two-car trailer and left straight to the destination in Texas. I had to have my Son-In-Law on the receiving end since they ended up dropping the car off sooner than expected. From pick up to drop off it was almost exactly 24 hours. Aside from being a bit dusty my black Audi arrived just as it left. No issues whatsoever and very satisfied with the service.

I've used Go2Transportation twice for moving Audi's around. They actually hold the Audi North America shipping contract out of the Texas port I believe (Their trailers are all Audi branded). I have had great experiences with them both times and have found their prices to be extremely fair.
