I see people say that but it doesn’t seem much different with it in car.

The transmission being separated from the block will make the job much easier than with it in the car and attached to the block.

It's all about your tenacity on how you want to get it done. There's no real wrong way to do it, just a way and a long way. 🙂

I have the front end apart. I’ll see how it with it in the car and if it becomes a bear then I’m almost at the point of pulling the motor.

Why would the trans being separated help that much. I don really see it being in the way

Only hard part I see doing it in car is getting the block surface nice and clean

Right now I've gotten the car to the point of pulling the motor. I just have to loosen the subframe bolts and pull it out. I'll probably separate the trans from the motor when out to make it easier to work around underneath it. There is no sealant where it seats up to the trans or at least that's the way it looks. I have another pan arriving on Thursday so that will give me something to do this weekend. I bought a metal wheel for the drill to clean the block down with.

A4 2.8 upper oil pan will work? That's great to know, I would hate to go through all this and then it leaks.

Removed old pan and installed new. Hope I have enough sealant on so that it doesn’t leak.

Why did you use the red RTV sealant? I was told the red RTV sealant is the wrong one to use and to ONLY use the black sealant because it is an oil repellent, while the red stuff is oil absorbent. Here is what I was told to use:

I used Dirko HT which is a high temp gasket maker.

I used Dirko gray sealant on the lower pan before and had no issues. This time I used a gasket.

+1 for Dirko HT, that's what I have for all my sealing needs. Even used it to seal the case on my '01 Corvette Z06 transmission when I rebuilt it.

Just use Silicone-based RTV sealant and you're good to go. Color doesn't matter. Dirko is good stuff, doesn't have to be the HT variety.

OP your squeeze-out looks pretty good in the photos, just make sure you don't overdo it along the inner part of the flange to where pieces come free in the pan.

I did check the inside after it had dried before I placed the lower pan. It looked to be the same as it was factory, we will see.
