Humming noise on new Michelin PS4S tires

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
Day two with the PS4S and they're better in every way from the PZeros, EXCEPT for this annoying hum at highway speed. It's a fluctuating, medium-pitch drone that varies with the road surface but never goes away. Looked at other threads and noone mentions it. Anyone else have this issue? Perhaps it subsides over time, otherwise the tire is an awesome upgrade.

Haven’t had that issue with mine. Are you sure it’s the tires? the rotors make a strange noise when close to a surface of similar height. have you had your RS3 long?

about 6k miles, got it 8 months ago. I know the PZeros didn't do this.

Just a thought, but, you might want to check the temperature of the tires in MMI and if one is running hotter than the others it may be an indication an alignment is needed.

I did get an alignment w/the install, but I'll keep an eye on it. Lack of response means either I'm super lucky or something else is up...

All the tires making this sound, or is it more pronounced as perhaps coming from one tire?

Are they 235/35/19 or have you changed tire size? I've installed 245/40/18 Michelin AS3+ and their performance now at 1765 miles is superior and much less road noise is considerable, compared to the Continental ExtremeContact 235/35/19 I put on the car, while I looked for a better tire configuration as it's factory SUMMER ONLY tires were absolutely useless in January 27°F weather when we bought our RS 3. I'd add that this 1765 miles is mostly fast country back roads we've been running for 33 years in BMW's, testing changes we had made involving tires, suspension, brakes, steering, ECU chips, etc. Unfortunately these back roads have not been maintained properly and are now pretty rough... so got to find better ones... a problem we're seeing with too many of our countries rural roads!

The ps4s are a little noisier. The pirrelis have some sound deadening foam inside. There is a bit more hum but not obtrusive. Hopefully they will settle in with wear.

Had these tires on a few cars, when brand new I noticed a light hum that disappeared after 200 miles or so. How many miles do you have on the new tires?

Seeing as you're running AS3+, were you running the EXTREMECONTACT DWS 06 tires before? Wanted to make sure I understand the comparison.

I think Rod's comparison is a bit pointless when comparing brands since you're comparing 18" tires vs 19" if you look at the sizes he mentioned. When you have a taller sidewall you're going to get a quieter tire overall. That's the reason SUV's have less road noise compared to sports sedans.

As for AS3+ vs DWS06 I think the general consensus is that the DWS06 is a quieter tire overall. I have I almost never heard of anyone complaining about tire comfort or noise from the DWS06. As you know that is the tire I am running now and it VERY comfortable and drop in road noise was considerable. This is expected comparing to the OEM summer tire but it was still a very drastic difference.

Oof. You're right, didn't even notice the different tire sizes and sidewall. Need to stop browsing when have awake.

Yes, was running DWS 06 before and am still running them on our 2015 Golf R with 18" Enkei wheels, after a lot of 19" tire testing on its factory wheels, which I gave up after a year of testing! Two 18" sets now with a total of 34K miles on 8 DWS 06 and with 60% of this mileage being fast country back roads runs!

The AS3+ now on our 2019 Audi RS 3 are QUIETER in our experience with 18" fitments and significant distance driven. My experience with 19" tires during the past 33 years I've been running at speed on country back roads in BMW's has shown me that the 18" configurations are superior. And I have spent a considerable amount on 19" tire configurations over this period with the same results. The 18" taller sidewall top line tires have delivered better handling and quieter performance in my experience... and the roads I've been testing on have degraded due to lack of proper maintenance over the years... so I am not driving on pristine surfaces!

Yes, they are definitely a louder tire than OEM. I get a drone with occasional high frequency vibes that are like nails on chalkboard. Part of the package.

That sounds like an issue. I’ve never had any noises with PS4S. They aren’t noticeably louder than Pirelli for me on the RS3 or my old TTS. They’re rated very well for noise too by tire rack.

Less than 200 miles and primarily the driver side front tire. Stock staggered fitment. Hope it disappears, currently fluctuates based on road surface. Maybe it will subside...

Out of curiosity is it all highways or specific? I have noticed recently 280 past cupertino I now have a hum/vibration since the road work on the stock tires. Having had the PS4S on my M3 Comp there is a lot more road feedback than the PZero.

It's all highways, but varies based on road surface. Today on 680s new smooth stretch near mission it was very faint, but quite prominent otherwise.
