Reprogram Key $189.00, New Key $360.00

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
Just called local Audi dealer to find out it costs Reprogram Key $189.00, New Key $360.00. If I buy a random Audi key locally, will they be able to reprogram that for me? Might be able to save a hundred bucks. Is there restrictions to the types of Audi key that I can get programmed? 2013 S6, ex. my current key has "S6" on the back of it. Thanks.

It Hass to be a brand new key and then yes they will be able to program it if they want but most of the time the dealerships will tell you if you did not buy the key from them they will not program it for liability bullshit purposes if you were here local I could do it for you I have the same dealer level scan tool and do the same dealer programming

Reprograming is one thing. How about cutting the physical key to match your vehicle? Mine took almost 3 weeks to come in from Germany when I ordered it from the dealer. They then deleted all programmed fobs from the vehicles memory the added what I had in hand plus the new one back in.

Key has to be ordered by vin. Buying a used key, brand new or not will not program. I work at a dealership and have tried programming extra keys we had just to see. And it will not work. Dont waist your money and just buy the correct key the first time.

I purchased a brand new key for my rs7 on eBay, it was the same exact part number Under the battery.
I was able to program it myself with Odis. Does not have to be ordered by vin as long as it is the same exact key part number. As far as cutting it is a different story, not sure if a locksmith could do it or not but I just wanted an extra one to start the car and unlock/lock via fob

to reinforce what the others are saying, in my prevision Audi (B8 S4) i purchased a refurbished/used key from Ebay. I didnt care about the key part, just wanted it for the remote. Brought it to the dealer for programming, they couldn't do it. waste of money.

Spend the money and get the key from a dealer.

If it helps, you can get the key for $238. make sure to order it by VIN.
you will still have to pay the 1hr of labor for programming.

With audi it has to be the factory level tool with a subscription to audi servers in Germany. It’s called ODIS

Apparently independent mechanics and locksmiths may go through a process and become "Vehicle Security Professionals" which allows access to systems for reprogramming keys, etc. One such shop is in Opelika Alabama: https://www.performance-services.net...ram-my-key-fob. I don't know where to find a list of such independents.

Hey @3g_bishi - can you link the seller you went through for your ebay key that worked with odis coding? i've been thinking about doing this on my A7 but haven't taken the jump yet.

I just went through this debacle about 3 weeks back for my 2015 A6 3.0t Prestige, here's my experience and input.

    1. A local locksmith cut and programmed a new key for $103 out the door, even met me at a local Denny's to do it.
    2. My key was bought new aftermarket on amazon for $35, he had zero issues with programming. If it is a used key from ebay, marketplace, craigslist etc. you CANNOT reprogram once written to a different car.
    3. If you have the Audi advance key with proximity that is a different story, the key I had done is just for emergency, if I lose my advance key, this will get me in and start the vehicle no problem.
    4. Also did a 2013 Jetta spare fob (cut and programmed) along with a new valet key for my daughters car which was also $103.

Hope this clears up some questions, I read this post previously looking for info on key cutting when trying to have mine done. Just trying to help out.

How do you start the car with a regular key? My s6 only has a start/stop button. Does the a6 have a slot like the b8/b8.5?

the cars with push button and no slot, have a spot where you can place the key fob that will allow it to start if the car can't sense the key in the car. I can't remember where mine is on the a7 but i think it is center console or maybe near steering column. Same place you place the key when coding new keys through odis. There are different versions of the key so regular probably just means non proximity key (opens doors when you get close). Not the actual metal key portion that is only used to unlock the car. Just a guess

Ah okay, I know what you're talking about. It reads the RFID chip in the fob. I've had to hold the fob there before when my battery was low

Yes, I should have been a little more clear. I had the key cut to open door only and the fob has to be held against center console to start the car. There's a clear difference in the pcb's when they keys are opened up.

    Hello 3g_bishi:
I have a 2018 RS7. I only have one key and would to add one or two more keys.
How does one get access to Odis to program the keys?
    Thank you in advance.

Just to correct everyone in this thread...

The dealer uses ODIS to program the keys.
The key must be a dealer-authorized key that is pre-coded to the car before programming.
That is the only thing that the dealer will do.

For aftermarket, there are several options. Even if you have the active/proximity key, there are options. I have a C7 S6, repaired it from a salvage title with only one key. I wanted another key, didn't want to pay a bunch of money for it.
The steps for using a junkyard/ebay key are:
-Get the right key fob. There are many versions of these keys that look very similar. Some are active/prox keys, some are not. Some use a different NXP chip than others but look identical. Really all that matters is that you select the correct type (prox or not prox) and have the same NXP chip.
-Get a replacement blade for the key. The aftermarket blade won't fit quite right on the fob even if it is the right one and this takes a tiny bit of dremeling of 2 nubs on the fob or the blade (dealer's choice) and cut the blade.
-Get someone to "virginize" the key fob (or do it yourself). If you are into learning electronics, the resources are out there, there are quite a few dumps on transpondery.
-Use one of the aftermarket tools that will add an (unauthorized key) to the car. I used Autel. Pre-code the (virginized and unauthorized) key using the "Make Dealer Key" function, and then program it to the car. Keep in mind that with these tools you must have at least one working key. You used to be able to do it via OBD even if you had no keys for the car, but VAG shut the servers down (used for calculations of sync data) about 2 years ago and that is that. Now if you have lost all keys the only way to do it outside of the dealer is to jailbreak the (encrypted) BCM to read the data from there, but doing this may potentially result in the dealer refusing to service any BCM related complaints in the future, so that is "at your own risk".

Edit to answer one of OP's original questions: The badging on the key is irrelevant. The ebay key I used is an unbadged key, probably from a C7 A6 that had the active/prox option.

You would need to get the correct VAS adapter and software, and use pre-coded and pre-cut keys from the dealer. I suspect that the cost of having the dealer program them is much lower than the VAS adapter. I bought mine quite some time ago but it seems that it was several hundred dollars which is almost certainly lower than the labor to program 2 keys to the car. If you are going through the dealer, the bulk of the cost is the keys themselves.

My only key fob was ran over by my apartments landscapers so I’m trying to find options to be able to at the very least drive to where I need to go. Bought my c7 a6 2.0L premium plus used and the emergency/plastic key and mock key fob are not in glove department. Any ideas or tips ?

Can you send a picture of the key? How bad is it? Is the circuit board intact?
